We know that almost every rose has thorns. Life is like a rose. It can be full of thorny issues. We also know that the rose produces beautiful flowers which are also very delicate. The same is true of life. Life has its rosy and fragile side. Thus, it requires a lot of carefulness and wisdom to handle the issues of life. Sometimes we don't always get what we want when we want it. It is up to us to manage what we have and make the most of it. It has been said that, "The happiest people don't necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the best of everything". So optimize what you we have! And at other times too in order to get what we want we must put up with some things. For the sake of the flower we must water the thorns. Practically, it means for the sake of your marriage partner you must put up with his or her difficult in-laws. For the sake of your grade you must put up with sacrificing some of your sleep. And for the sake of peace sometimes you have to be the one to say 'I'm sorry' , even though you are not at fault. Be accomodating! !

We are excited to partner with Saving AJ Inc. for a second time….The Ujima parent support group will begin on February 21, 2024. This year we have 2 sections. One for Moms and one for Dads. Dinner and free child care will be provided. Come join us as we join together in community, and share ways in which we can build stronger and healthier families.

Sankofa is excited to partner with Saving AJ to deliver “Wellness Break” we are providing free counseling sessions to Saving AJ parents and caregivers. In order to deliver in all of our roles and and responsibilities taking time for you is crucial. It’s an honor to be able to deliver this service to our community.

Yesterday our staff welcomed the start of our new home grown and lovingly crafted family therapy program…F.A.I.T.H. This is 15 session brief therapy program created by our very own Dr. Traci Terrance, Dr. Kiah Nyame, and owner Khadijah Tillman. F.A.I.T.H is designed to help families strengthen basic bonds, build communication skills, and to work through present day and generational traumas. We will begin delivering these services to the community in late September.

Our Owner and Founder Khadijah Tillman will be panelist at this conference speaking about mental health issues, resources, and treatment models within communities of color. We welcome the opportunity to increase awareness and resources for culturally responsive mental health services.

Sankofa attended L Mac William’s “I’m Not Ok” this was a powerful performance which included a series of monologues and artistic performances that brought the viewer deep into the trenches of the impact of trauma, loss, depression, social expectations of masculinity/femininity, and resiliency within the Black community. The director explicitly and creatively showed the viewer the deep impact these traumas have on one’s psychological, physical and spiritual well being. The performers and the director did an amazing job. Very well done.

We at Sankofa were honored to be present, and for the opportunity to engage with community around the availability of culturally responsive mental health services.

Dr. Kiah will be hosting his world class Afrikan World History class at the Fredrick Douglass Resource Center. Program has already started and runs every Tuesday at 6:30 through 3/21/23.
