BURD Home Health BURD Home Health is on a mission to bring peace to individuals and families by empowering them to live the life they choose.

Self-direction helps individuals living with a disability maintain their freedom and independence through home-based care services which they choose and manage themselves. Among the most popular forms of self-direction is the ability to hire a family member or friend as a personal care aide rather than having a stranger in your home or being placed into institutional care. At the core of self-direction is the belief that individuals receiving care know their needs better than anyone else and should be empowered to control any aspects of their care as they prefer.

One out of every five Americans is a caregiver. Whether you’ve just started your caregiving journey or have been on this path for years, understanding your role as a caregiver for a senior family member can sometimes feel overwhelming.

Here are 5 important things to consider when caring for a senior family member:
1. Set medication alarms to help keep medications organized and taken on time.
2. Learn how to recognize and respond to medical emergencies.
3. Communicate with patience and respect and approach conversations thoughtfully and focus on their needs and independence.
4. Create a safe living environment by reducing fall risks and keeping essential items easily accessible.
5. Take care of yourself as a caregiver, too because support systems and breaks are essential for long-term caregiving.

Caregiving can be challenging, but having the right tools and knowledge can make a meaningful difference for both you and your loved one.
