Our doctors are pioneering new diagnostics and treatments to help preserve vision. Often, clinical trials and new treatments are tested at the Flaum Eye Institute first. As the only eye institute in the region, we're committed to providing state-of-the-art eye care for common and complex vision problems right in Upstate New York.

Thanks to research being done at Flaum and the University of Rochester, full vision restoration is closer to becoming a reality. By growing replacement light-sensing cells in the lab and planting them into damaged retinas, it allows the brain to interpret new vision signals.

Meet our cornea service chief, Dr. Scott MacRae. Dr. MacRae has performed over 20,000 surgeries and has been a cornea specialist for more than 30 years. He has been an innovator in laser vision correction, helping to develop surgical techniques and technologies that are used around the world.

On her birthday, we remember the late Dr. Mina Chung. Dr. Chung brought a bright light to everyone she knew. She was a great clinician, mentor, and friend to so many. To honor her legacy, we created the Mina M. Chung Professorship. This year, we were proud to name Dr. Vikas Khetan as the first recipient of this honor.

Our next service chief is our neurology chief, Dr. Zoë Williams. Dr. Williams is interested in optic nerve disorders and is conducting new research into optic nerve imaging modalities. She completed her residency at the University of Rochester, before then completing a fellowship at Johns Hopkins University.

The Smith family was enjoying a day at the beach when their son, Beckham, appeared to have a grain of sand get in his eye. It turned out to be more than just sand. Beckham had a large mass in his left eye and was diagnosed with retinoblastoma. He needed treatment immediately. As they were preparing to travel to Philadelphia to get treatment, one phone call changed everything and led them to the Flaum Eye Institute and the University of Rochester.

We'd like to welcome Emily Darling, O.D. to our team! She completed her residency with us earlier this year, and will be practicing at our College Town and Geneva locations. Darling provides a wide range of services including eye exams, contact lens fittings, and the diagnosing and managing of ocular diseases, among others.

Our next service chief we'd like you to meet is Dr. Karen Allison, who leads our glaucoma service. Dr. Allison has decades of experience from minimally invasive glaucoma procedures, to complex surgeries. She is passionate about bringing collaborative, and patient-centered vision care to the Rochester community.

Congratulations to Dr. Christine Coward on receiving the Bronze Award for Team Excellence from the Greater Rochester Quality Council. She received the award for her work in creating an on-site food pantry at our South Clinton office. Thank you for your commitment and great work, Dr. Coward, in helping the Rochester community!
