🚑 Move Over, Lyon County! 🚑
Iowa’s Move Over Law requires drivers to:
• Yield to emergency vehicles with lights and sirens — every second counts
• Pull to the right and stop until the vehicle passes
• Move over one lane (if safe) and slow down on multi-lane roads
🔔 How you can help keep everyone safe:
• Move over early — don’t wait until the last second. Scanning ahead and using your mirrors gives you more time to act safely.
• Avoid stopping on top of hills — emergency responders can’t see oncoming traffic to go around safely, so keep going until it’s safe.
• Use your turn signal — lets other drivers know your intentions and also tells the emergency vehicle what you’re doing.
• Pull into driveways or parking lots to your right instead of stopping on the road whenever possible
• Keep intersections clear — stay put if you can’t safely move out of the way
• Slow down and check mirrors if the vehicle in front of you suddenly pulls over — DO NOT swerve into the other lane to go around them, they may have seen the emergency vehicle first
• Check mirrors before merging back onto the road — another emergency vehicle may be right behind
• Don’t follow emergency vehicles closely — they may need to stop suddenly
• Farm equipment or slow-moving vehicles — ease right and avoid sudden turns. Stay predictable.
