"Ever wondered why some children seem to hold onto worries long after the moment has passed?”
That’s the hippocampus at work — the part of the brain that stores experiences and memories.
When a child has been through stressful or overwhelming moments, their hippocampus remembers how that felt. Later, even small reminders can trigger the same anxious response.
Understanding this helps us see that a child isn’t ‘overreacting’ — their brain is simply trying to keep them safe based on what it remembers.
When we help a child build new, calm experiences, we’re teaching the hippocampus that things can feel different now.
