To all women out there who care for children. You, a woman of greatness. You have given your everything, with courage and bravery to step up and voice your child’s needs. You have passion, wear your heart on your sleeve and dare to be bold. Yes you, whose tenacity and steadfast strength has built your resilience. You have shined honor and determination in the face of challenge and difficult situations. Give yourself credit, greater than the little you think you deserve. Give yourself a moment to sit with your heart and let your mind whisper sweet thanks for a job well done and a commitment well served. You are love, and your child thinks of you as more than just a hero.

Raising successful children in low resource communities begins with nurturing and informed parental caregivers. They are the reason we’ve traveled to Honduras, the Dominican Republic and India to explore positive solutions to the day-to-day challenges of raising children with hearing loss. PGV sup...

For a limited time, I'm offering professors and teachers at USA universities and colleges a FREE copy of my book, Coaching and Empowering Caregivers. Book details can be found on my website (www.greatervoice.com). The intention is for professors and teachers to review the book and recommend it as a student resource and textbook. It is currently being used at a few universities.

Outcomes in children’s development are best realized when parental caregivers have good self-esteem, develop competencies, and are informed and emotionally equipped to cope with hearing loss. An approach to coach and empower them must be positive, supportive, and nurturing. Published by Partners f...

I really love hearing when people say, ‘shift from diagnostic assessment and medical interventions to holistic practices’. Positive interventions that support mental health of caregivers are increasingly finding their way to the table, and I believe are even more essential as parents navigate their children’s needs and a team of professionals.

While family contexts are different across the globe, addressing the needs of families must acknowledge parent competencies, personal resources, and parenting capacity, as well as their challenges, fears and grief. Within a positive context, I’m sure many of service providers and practitioners balance these with hope and parent potentiality - effectively coaching and helping parents to cope these days, or on any other day for that matter. Shifting the paradigm, and enabling parents through character strengths, leadership potential, and personal resources, also involves ways to shift the caregiver mindset (aka Carol Dweck’s growth mindset or B. Fredrickson’s broad and build theory).

The importance of positive mental health can not and should not be swept under the table. For five years, I've now watched larger institutions infuse more holistic practices, like mindfulness and meditation. Beyond these, we have an opportunity to explore what works for families. Perhaps now is the time to collaborate and share in this intriguing conversation.

I want to wish each of you a healthy and prosperous new year (year of the metal rat). Sadly, we lost an influential leader in our deaf and hard of hearing community. Jane Driscoll, teacher of the hearing impaired (she preferred this title), passed the week before Christmas. She was a founding director of PGV and supported our missions to help children and teachers in the Dominican Republic. She was my guiding light, as she was for hundreds of other families and their children with hearing loss in the greater Boston area. Jane will be missed dearly. I want to thank her family for the contributions that have been made in honor of Jane to PGV.

When we stop and rest our minds, still our hearts, and listen, then we can more closely grasp the essence of our purpose.
