Given that independent physicians are reimbursed 60% less than hospital based counterparts, it's easy to understand why so many chose to leave independent practice- but now even the hospital systems are feeling the pain of a broken healthcare system.

Healthcare tied to for profit based insurance companies is leading the collapse of medical care in both Maine & the US. Hospitals need much leaner administrative structures to survive. Anyone in private practice will acknowledge this.

Sadly we are coming close to a time when most privately practicing physicians will no longer be able to accept insurance as stagnant reimbursements & obscene claim denials prevent responsible fiscal management.
We must do more to curb the insurance choke hold that is collapsing modern healthcare.

The state's major hospitals rank near the bottom among 50 states in 3 metrics — operating margin, debt burden and age of facilities — according to an analysis done for the Maine Hospital Association.

We will always do our best to support our patients, but it is important to know that our health care system is failing all of us.

In my personal opinion, the best way forward would be to eliminate for profit health insurance companies.
Although I suspect that their pockets are too deep to imagine this is a possibility.

Firms including United Healthcare have denied basic scans and taken months to reconsider, physicians say
