Starting in January 2026, residents of Knox, Waldo and Lincoln counties can now get Direct Primary Care (DPC) memberships covered by an ACA compliant Maine marketplace plan as Mending Health Insurance has been recently approved to expand into the Midcoast region by the Maine Insurance Commission.

While we founded Megunticook Medicine to avoid the problems insurance causes in primary care, Mending is different because it simply pays DPC practices a monthly fee. Mending has been working with Portland area DPC practices already. Similarly, local employers have been providing primary care memberships with us for their employees.

This will be available at Megunticook Medicine for patients age 2 and up. Like other ACA plans, this insurance covers preventive care and preexisting conditions. See CoverME.gov or Mending.com for details.

We unfortunately frequently have difficulties with pertussis in our community as well, though fortunately have not lost any babies to this preventable disease as yet this winter. Please call your doctor to talk about how to prevent pertussis, including with the vaccine.

We love practicing direct primary care because it’s so simple! Our patients’ monthly membership fees cover all their office care. And, in a simple system, it is easy to provide excellent access, including for same day appts with your own doctor! Sometimes you really CAN keep it simple!

A Maine woman sought care at a clinic for a tick bite, then paid full price after her insurer denied coverage. Its reason? She didn't have preapproval for the walk-in visit, even though testing later detected the pathogen that causes Lyme disease.

Adda Winkes of Megunticook and Chandler Blodgett of Pen Bay Pharmacy had a great time bringing flu shots to Ash Point and Cushing Community schools this morning.
