Happy Labor Day! We are closed today for the holiday. We will reopen tomorrow. We appreciate everyone’s patience as we navigate through this COVID wave. Quick update on COVID:
- Positives continue to be seen in most age groups. The severity of symptoms when present has remained mild. None of our patients have needed to be admitted or referred to the ER.
- We are seeing a good number of strep cases as well as RSV and rhinovirus (common cold). Some kids have also had minor intestinal germs. A few co-infections have been identified, meaning some kids have had 2 different ailments at the same time, for example COVID and strep.
- Some people have asked about the duration of immunity after infection. Studies suggest it may last upwards of 8 to 10 months, perhaps longer if additional exposure occurs in that time period.
- A common question has been about monoclonal antibody treatment for COVID. Again, most pediatric cases can be managed with simple OTC meds. Here are the recommendations about using it in confirmed high risk cases:
- Offered at Driscoll, referral is needed
- Age: 12 or older only
- High risk considerations (see below)
- Started within 10 days of symptom onset
- High risk considerations, in other words some pre existing conditions that could result in a more severe COVID outcome:
- Obesity
- Heart disease
- Poorly controlled asthmatics on daily meds
- Conditons requiring immunosuppressive drugs
- We recommend the COVID vaccine for any of our patients 12 and older with one of the above conditions. We also recommend it for any parent with one of the above or for those who live with younger children with any of the above.
- Signs and symptoms of worsening or severe illness
- Prolonged fever for more than 3 days
- Temperature > 100.4 F
- Do not rely on skin thermometers
- Labored breathing
- Rapid respirations
- Rate (breaths per minute) vary by age
- Accessory muscle retractions
- Pulling around the neck or between ribs
- Severe chest pain
- Excessive coughing
- Do not rely solely on pulse oximeters
Please let us know if you have any concerns or questions.
