"Who's behind the mask?" ๐Ÿ‘€

Between the ages of 4-5, we typically see English-speaking children use and understand locatives, such as "behind," "between," and "beside."

Last night, Lighthouse Speech Therapy had the honor of attending and participating in the annual Gala, and let me tell youโ€ฆ. It blew us away.

When I received a random email last March asking if Lighthouse would like to join forces to provide speech and language services to participantsโ€ฆ I never knew it would take us here. To a room full of businesses and individuals dedicated to giving to a cause greater than themselvesโ€ฆ one that now is so near and dear to my heart.

Watching Rockford come together to raise thousands (and I mean thousands) of dollars for the Amina Grace Speech and Language Program was just incredible. And Iโ€™m feeling even more fortunate that is the one who gets to interact with the Playhouse on a weekly basis and spread her kindness and knowledge with everyone there. She is truly the one making the program succeed โค๏ธ

Of course, pictured last but certainly not โ€œlastโ€ in any way, is my official board of directors, my husband and my parents. The silent leaders behind Lighthouse, guiding business decisions and new opportunities with many late night chats. It was so fun to share tonight with you and show you a piece of what Angie and I have been working so hard on this year.

Thank you, Rockford, for seeing the potential in the Amina Grace program and for helping Lighthouse return another year to help participants reach the best version of themselves โค๏ธ

Did you know book reading is another communication opportunity? Just like a conversation, youโ€™re using language strategies like:

๐Ÿ“– Shared attention- focusing on 1 thing (the book!)

๐Ÿ“– Turn-taking- taking turns talking and reading

๐Ÿ“– Recasting and repeating- repeating words throughout the book and echoing what your child just said, but how an adult would say it!

In honor of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) month, let's debunk a common myth.

โŒ MYTH: AAC is a "last resort" SLPs consider when a child has difficulty communicating verbally.

โœ… DEBUNKED: SLPs consider AAC early and often! In fact, AAC should be introduced early before a child experiences communication failure to encourage communication.

๐Ÿ’ก WHY? We know that early childhood is a critical period for communication development. Preventing communication failure and finding an appropriate way to help your child to develop essential skills cannot be understated!

Wish more people knew this? Please like and share with others to spread awareness this October! ๐ŸŒŸ
