Diet or Exercise? Losing weight has always been connected to exercise. Unfortunately, many people are unable to exercise due to orthopedic conditions and pain that make exercising impossible while the excess weight may be contributing to the pain. And so it goes round and round. But exercise is not necessary for weight loss. It may take longer without it but it can be done. Who has the time to exercise? Most people live busy lives trying and often failing at checking off everything on their daily "to do" list. Exercise is most likely not on that list. Some people, however, find the time. Squeeze it in. I don’t know to many people that actually get up at 5:30 a.m excited beyond limits to get to the gym. They do it. But they do it under self duress. They push themselves out of bed, into sneakers and through the gym doors. Some of us hear, "REALLY? ARE YOU REALLY GOING TO DO THIS?” roll over and go back to sleep. Others ignore the early morning hour and that obnoxious voice begging to stay in bed because they put it on their list and they are determined to check it off. For those with little time, who would rather sleep than put on sneakers, there is hope. The 7 mine workout featured in the NY Times and scientifically supported to be an effective routine can be the answer. Check it out. I would also suggest searching the amazing apps available online because sometimes all you need is a little something that makes you put it on your list.

In 12 exercises deploying only body weight, a chair and a wall, it fulfills the latest mandates for high-intensity effort, which essentially combines a long run and a visit to the weight room into about seven minutes of steady discomfort — all of it based on science.

I have had many a discussion with patients regarding aging and the functional limitations it brings with it. The changes in our bodies that occur as years pass cannot be stopped. But we can travel down the inevitable road of aging with greater ease if we maintain a healthy weight. Excessive weight not only affects our health but can significantly limit our mobility, stamina and place increased mechanical forces on joints.

Being only 10 pounds overweight exerts 30-60 pounds of pressure upon the knee joint with each step taken, causing pain that limits function and makes it so much harder to enjoy our golden years. Be proactive and give your joints the love and attention they deserve.
