While RSV and Influenza are decreasing, Coronavirus is going around in high numbers. Weekly Covid cases in the US have been high for all of December, but are down slightly to 403,000 per week. Of course, since most cases are now discovered on home tests, case figures continue to be much lower than the actual numbers. Hospitalizations have continued to increase slightly and are now at over 36,000 people. Deaths have decreased to 362 people per day. Maryland is reflecting these trends as our hospitalizations for Covid have jumped to 783 people. Cases in Maryland have increased to 16.2 daily cases per 100,000 people, but Montgomery County has decreased slightly to 17.1 daily cases per 100,000 people. There has been a change in the nation and our area to a new subvariant- Omicron XBB.1.5 has doubled its share of the cases and now accounts for 40% of cases nationwide and over 30% in our region. Omicron BQ.1.1 and BQ.1 account for over 50% of cases and other variants are only present in small amounts. However, there are signs that these variants are NOT more severe or causing more illnesses than previous versions. It does appear that previous Omicron infection and bivalent booster vaccines give some protection against these variants.
Unfortunately, with the rise in cases and hospitalizations, Montgomery County is back in the Medium Risk Level per the CDC guidelines. That means that if you are high-risk for serious illness, you should wear a high quality mask when indoors in public. If you will be around someone who is very high-risk, you should consider testing to prevent spreading any illness. If you are due for a booster vaccine, now is a good time to get one. And remember that hand-washing and staying home when you are sick will help prevent the spread of most illnesses!
We hope you have had a wonderful holiday season! We look forward to a healthy and happy 2023!
