IT'S WELLNESS WEDNESDAY WITH OUR FAMILY PRACTITIONER Dana Davis Logwood

I treat a lot of COVID patients. One of the things I often hear is, “I tested positive for COVID so I started the recommended supplements.”

*sigh*😒

Will they help? Yes. However, it would have helped more had you started the supplements at least 2 or 3 months ago to get your immune system tuned up in advance. It’s kind of like making sure your HVAC system is in good working condition before severe weather hits. If we were to have another freeze like last year and your heater was not working well, and then you put extra demand on the heating system because of how cold it got outside, the heater may not be able to keep you warm to your comfort level, and may cut out completely from the extra demand in a short period of time. But with the freeze and the ice, and so many other people with a similar issue, will the repairman be able to make it out to get it running? If your HVAC system had maintenance, odds are it would be in working order and able to keep you comfortable and safe during extreme weather.

That’s the position healthcare providers are getting put into frequently. Many do not do “maintenance” on their bodies ahead of time to be ready when they are exposed to viruses, bacteria, fungi or any other agent that requires the ability to heal. Aside from healthy diet and moderate exercise, taking a few of the recommended supplements daily can give your immune system what it needs to fight when the need arises.

Here are a few of the basic supplements that research suggests may help fight COVID and any other illness:

Multivitamin- make sure it’s a good, water soluble multivitamin with natural forms of the included nutrients. Most grocery and drugstore brands can not be broken down by the body very well, which means you don't get much benefit from them. We can help you choose a good one if you like.

Vitamin D3- Remember that you can overdose on this supplement so please stick to the recommended amount of between 2000 iu and 5000 iu daily unless otherwise directed by your healthcare provider.

Vitamin C- large doses can cause loose stools. If this happens, simply cut back on your dose. I recommend starting at 500 mg twice a day.

Probiotic- Multiple benefits including proper digestion and absorption of nutrients needed to keep immune system functioning properly

NAC (N acetyl cysteine)- research trials in reputable medical journals show that NAC has multiple benefits, including helping to fight COVID

Zinc- Research shows zinc helps regulate the inflammatory response, an important part of the immune system

Quercetin- a strong antioxidant that has anti-viral and anti-allergic properties as well as helping to regulate the inflammatory response.

Omega 3 Fatty Acids (Fish or Krill Oil)- Reduce inflammation, helps in production of antibodies and fights viruses.

Please don’t wait till a crisis occurs to do immune system maintenance or repair! If you have any questions or would like help to improve your health, please give us a call!
