I had an interview the other day where I was asked what I carry in my doula bag. I carry a few tools and always keep my eye out to add new things I learn about (I have a little list of some things I want to add), but honestly in births my hands and my words are what gets used the most. I have attended births and used everything in the bag and been to births and never opened the zipper.

Yesterday's birth was beautiful. Full of grace and so many answered prayers.

It was a beautiful day. The sunshine and some Fall leaves. There was peace and quiet, even in moments of difficulty.

Worship music is beautiful in labor... but a sound I love to hear is a mama who is crying out to Lord with her own words. A prayer that isn't eloquent but raw, real, and beautiful. Voicing surrender to not only her savior but her Heavenly Father. The sounds of desperation that Heaven hears and responds to. Sometimes it is a quiet, intimate expression to the Father and other times it is a roar that is not a afraid to loudly express the need for mercy.

Psalm 18:6
In my distress I called to the LORD; I cried to my God for help. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came before him, into his ears.

Psalm 91:15
He will call on me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him.

Psalm 34:17
The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them;
He delivers them from all their troubles.

Coming off of a quick but beautiful birth this morning where mama caught her baby girl...

LABOR POSITIONS

There is absolutely a place for various labor positions and we do want to balance rest and movement in labor BUT, you do not need always need to do all of those positions flooding your social media.

As a doula I can for sure make a suggestion on a position. However, if I walk into a labor where mama is in her rhythm..coping well.. following her body's leading.. I don't feel the need to interrupt that. I have been in labors and done many positions and been in labors where very few positional suggestions were needed. Sure, I may suggest other things (like this morning I suggested we moved from the living room to the patio...and used my rebozo for a bit) but this mama was in tune with her body and surrendering to the contractions and labor progressed just fine.

So yes, you can be familiar with positions but I want you to focus more on surrendering to the process, being at peace and not in fear, and going with the flow of what your body knows to do. If we need to do something differently we can, but you can have an amazing birth and not do everything you saw on social media.

The page has a new name! Except I made a typo and it should say "doula" instead of "doulas". Now I can't change it for 60 days 🤣.

This page started out as BirthWell Doulas when myself and Nikki joined together to doula. We have supported each other throughout the years, but seasons change. Nikki has relocated outside DFW and so we are no longer "doulaing" together, but we remain connected as friends and still text each other about birth! I miss you!

So for those of you already following along, thanks for supporting us! If you are new to the page, welcome! I am going to attempt to post and share more ❤️

While waiting on a class to start, I looked at some notes in the back of book from when I was planning labor while pregnant. You may laugh, but yep you are reading that correctly. If it was a service day at church I fully planned on being there for worship and the word. I couldn't think of a better way to begin labor. I also considered going up there even if there was no service so that I could turn the worship music on and shut myself in the sanctuary and then go home to deliver. Not joking, that was my plan. Ask my husband and my photographer 😆. In some ways that might sound crazy, but don't put your labor in a box. Whatever brings you rest and peace is what we want to lean into.

BUT

Also be flexible, because baby's can change the plan and that's okay too. My plan didn't unfold the way I thought. Prepare, but let your labor unfold how it needs to.

I also wanted to have the song "Goodness of God" playing as he was born and he came so quickly that didn't happen either. But God likes to love on us and that's the song that came on when my first doula client after my labor was delivering her baby boy.

Been busy doula day, and blessed to serve! More on the to-do list, but plenty was accomplished today.

Check out this photo by Blayre Weaver Photography from a recent birth we were at together. This mama, Bri, is such an amazing woman. Her heart in her labor & birth was to see God glorified.

Good night!

It's been a while friends! Hopefully 2025 will include way more posts so that you can get to know us better and see what we are up to. We want to also share tips, ideas, and encouragement.

Recently sent an intake form and look at this sweet mama's response 🥹

I have some availability for early 2025 if time got away from you and you are looking for a doula. Would love to support you🥰

Being invited into the birth space is an honor. Especially when you are asked to serve not just once, but again. There is something special about being able to serve with an established relationship with mama and family. Every time you give birth, the Lord will do a new thing. No birth is the same, but He is. He uses every circumstance to reveal His nature, love, purposes. We aren't just surrendering to the process of labor and birth, but to the process of sanctification.

Part of being a doula is to know when to step back. I know you always think of us giving counter pressure, giving mom verbal encouragement, bringing her water... and we do all those things. But there is also a time to step back and give space. Thank you Holy Spirit for guiding these moments.

Many dads are afraid that a doula will take their place. Dads, we could never replace you.
