This is a condition, whereupon a strike on the chest at the absolute refractory period of the cardiac cycle (R on T) can initiate a dysrhythmia (abnormal heart rhythm) called “Torsade de Pointe” which means twisting of peaks.
That ventricular tachycardia has a very unusual and characteristic appearance on the electrocardiogram-polymorphic ventricular tachycardia degenerating to ventricular fibrillation. 
Without the normal electrical impulse conduction in the heart, with ventricular fibrillation, the heart is unable to pump blood at all. 
It is a rare cause of sudden death, and requires immediate resuscitation, and defibrillation.
It is amazing that the football player is still alive and testament to the rapid care of that he received. 
No prior disease or medication/drug use needs to be present.
