As Director of Calhoun County EMS, I would like to thank all the great people of the county that supported us through the push for EMS to be an Essential Service. Unfortunately, we fell just a little short of the required 60%. But, please know this, there are a lot of committed EMS staff members that will not back down and we will be back stronger and more determined to show the continued commitment to Calhoun County. The staff members of Calhoun County EMS along with the volunteers of our allied volunteer agency will continue to strive to demonstrate our commitment to deliver the best Emergency Medical Care throughout the county, while supporting various communities, businesses, schools, hospital, and every citizen throughout Calhoun County. We are going to take a short break from the campaign to regroup and revitalize, but please continue to monitor this FB page for bigger events, details, and demonstrations of our commitment and push for Essential Services. Again, thank you Calhoun County for your support. Bruce

It has been said that transfers should be a "hospital problem" or responsibility. The truth is the majority of rural Iowa hospitals rely on local EMS services to provide transports to higher level care facilities.

This service that is provided by Calhoun County EMS is no different than our surrounding counties.

Below information about hospital transports was provided in a Department Of Health and Human Services in June of 2025.

There has been some conversation about our current EMS budget and where the money is going.

Calhoun County EMS is funded by Calhoun County. You can view Calhoun County's budget at the Iowa Department of Management's website or by contacting the Auditor's office.

We have provided the following breakdown of the EMS budget for the 2025-2026 fiscal year.

EMS Essential Service Facts:

It is being spread that we are asking for $16.50/acre for farmland as the tax levy amount... this is FALSE information.

This tax levy means a tax of UP TO $.89/acre of farmland and UP TO $.65/$1,000 property value MINUS rollbacks for 15 years. This means that EMS would be guaranteed up to $620,482.56/year (based on 2024 tax assessments) and must show up to your 911 emergency.

These tax levy funds remain in Calhoun County and can only be used for EMS services, to include but not limited to: ambulances, equipment, training, & assistance and supplies to our volunteer services (Lohrville & Farnhamville).

In relation to our neighboring counties, Calhoun County is asking for less than what Webster and Sac counties approved. Webster County passed up to $.75/$1,000 property value tax levy. Sac County approved up to $.75/$1,000 property value AND 1% income tax levy.

EMS Essential Service is not just a Calhoun County issue. It is an issue that affects all of Iowa. There is no state law that mandates EMS be essential in Iowa.

Senate File 615 signed in to law in 2021 provided the framework for each COUNTY to decide if EMS is an essential service. As of June 2025, only 21 counties have passed EMS Essential Service in Iowa.

Voting Tuesday gives YOU the opportunity to help decide the future of EMS in Calhoun County. Your vote will help keep timely access to emergency care in our local communities.
