NASW-CT is proud to announce Dr. George Appleby, MSW, Ph.D. (1942-2024) has posthumously been named a 2025 NASW Social Work Pioneer. Dr. Appleby, a former professor and dean at Southern, is remembered as a social work educator, policy practitioner, and community-engaged researcher who led the social work response to HIV/AIDS. Dr. Appleby was an instrumental leader in Connecticut and nationally.
He was active with the NASW Connecticut Chapter throughout his career. He was named NASW-CT Social Worker of the Year in 1984 and served as President of NASW-CT from 1990-1992. Under his leadership, he encouraged community activism and political engagement by social workers, schools of social work and their constituents. He established the chapter’s PACE (Political Action for Candiate Election), appointed the chapter’s first AIDS Task Force and also can be credited with initiating Student Lobby Day. Dr. Appleby was honored with the NASW-CT Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009.
Dr. Appleby’s leadership was critical to the advancing the profession of social work here in Connecticut. He established a Training Academy in the Department of Children and Families (DCF), negotiated title protection of social workers in DCF and other public agencies as well as helped prepare for social work licensure. Appleby’s political capacities and goals have helped lay the groundwork for the NASW-CT Chapter’s legislative success today.
Dr. Appleby was also active at the national level where he chaired many major NASW committees. These included the Nominations Committee, Child Welfare Committee, Political Action and Advocacy Committee, and the Committee on Gay, Le***an, and Bisexual Issues. He also served on many committees of the Council on Social Work Education.
The National Association of Social Workers Foundation (NASWF) created the NASW Social Work Pioneers® program to honor social workers who have made a significant contribution to advancing the profession.
