Opening the hip early when pitching puts a lot of stress on the shoulder and elbow. It reduces hip shoulder separation and limits velocity.

A shortened stride length is usually associated with this problem forcing even more stress on the arm.

Increasing the stride length to 80-90% of your body height and staying closed until later in the delivery increases your velocity, as well as, reduces your risk of injury. It allows you to use your hips to generate your force through the upper body.
