Blood tests are essential in preconception and pregnancy to assess nutrient levels, hormone balance, and overall health.
My recommended tests include:
- Full blood count
- Iron studies including iron, transferrin, transferrin saturation & ferritin
- Full thyroid panel including TSH, ft4, ft3 & antibodies
- Liver & kidney function
- Vitamin D
- Zinc, copper & ceruloplasmin
- Blood lipids including triglycerides, total cholesterol, LDL & HDL
- Fasting glucose, insulin & HbA1c
- Hormone panel including FSH, LH, estradiol, testosterone, DHEA-s, prolactin (day 3 of your cycle) and progesterone and estradiol (mid luteal).
Ideally you should have a blood test within 3-6 months before conceiving to allow time to correct potential imbalances. Doctors may not order all of these tests, so you may need to order some privately.
It’s also important to have your results checked by a naturopath or functional practitioner for a more comprehensive overview that looks at any and all imbalances rather than just disease states.
