Have you read the recent AMTA Profession Report?

76% of the public wants coverage by health insurance. 91% of therapists want health care integration. The public's belief that massage is healthcare is at record highs. Physician referrals are up. Health care professionals are recommending massage more than ever — 44% of consumers who discussed massage with their doctor were referred or strongly recommended to get one.

And yet only 12% of therapists are being reimbursed by health insurance. Only 3% of a therapist's work week involves insurance billing. Consumer use of massage actually declined from 23% to 21% over the past year, with price sensitivity cited as a major factor — meaning people who want massage and whose doctors are recommending it are not getting it because they cannot afford it without coverage.

The gap between what the public wants, what therapists want, what physicians are recommending, and what the insurance system actually delivers is not narrowing. It is staying stubbornly, structurally wide. And why is that? Any guesses?

The report also contains one number that is directly relevant to the governance and standards conversation happening right now. Massage Envy is the official sponsor of this report — its logo is on the cover. Massage Envy employs roughly 30,000 therapists and pays them an average of $29.84 per hour, the lowest of any work setting tracked. Therapists at franchises receive 32 cents on every dollar the client pays — also the lowest of any setting.

The organization whose logo is on the cover of AMTA's annual research report is the largest employer of massage therapists in the country and the setting where therapists are compensated least relative to what clients pay.

Just a little known fact that belongs in any reading of what this report says about the profession's interests and who is at the table when its data is produced and published.🤔
