The best way to learn anything is through play.

Children can learn important social skills while playing such as: problem solving, advocating for themselves, decision-making skills, working in groups, sharing and resolving conflicts.

As children develop and grow, so does their way of playing. As children proceed in the stages of play, their play becomes more complex and involves more and more interacting with others. For children to practice social skills like cooperating, compromising and problem solving, the best way to do that is to let them play.

Trick-or-treating when you have a child with a disability can be, well, tricky. Here are some ideas to help your family enjoy a spooktacular event.

Involve your child:

-Map out a route together and consider a practice run.
-Use a social story or video of children trick-or-treating to help your child know what to expect. Schedule a practice run of trick-or-treating and be honest about some of the challenges they might face.
-Buy or bring a flashlight. Flashlights can go a long way in making children feel comfortable in the dark.
-If your child has mobility needs that make walking or stairs a challenge, consider a backup plan on how they can participate. This could include Halloween with a buddy who can help them participate, looking for homes that are more accessible or asking neighbours to bring treats to your child on the driveway instead!

Attn JKST parents: your children can wear their costumes this week! We will use a short period of time each session to target some goals while trick-or-treating around the clinic. 🎃 Please let us know if you don’t want your child participating.

Did you know gestures are an important part of your child’s communication development?

By 16 months, most children are using a variety of gestures to express themselves—even before they have all the words! Gestures lay the foundation for language and social skills.

👉 By 16 months, your child should typically be using at least 16 gestures, such as:
✔️ Waving hi/bye
✔️ Shaking head “no”
✔️ Reaching arms up to be picked up
✔️ Pointing to objects of interest
✔️ Clapping
✔️ Blowing kisses
✔️ Showing or giving an object

💡 Using gestures helps children learn how to share ideas, get needs met, and connect with others. If you’re noticing your little one isn’t using gestures by this age, it might be a good idea to check in with a speech-language pathologist or your pediatrician. Give us a call at 479-401-2077!

✨ Remember—communication starts long before words!
