Wednesday, April 29th, is National Fentanyl Awareness Day.

The observance was founded by parents who have lost loved ones to the drug overdose crisis. The aim of the commemoration is to raise awareness about the alarming number of deaths caused by illegally made fentanyl, a dangerous synthetic opioid.

FREE Naloxone training and kits are available from the Rolette County Public Health District. Contact Jennifer at 477-5646 for your free Naloxone kit or set up a training on how to recognize the signs of an overdose and how to respond to an overdose.

Even when e-cigarettes or v**e products are labeled as “ni****ne-free,” they are not harmless.

Parents should know that these products can still expose young people to chemicals and aerosols that may irritate and damage the lungs. When heated and inhaled, the flavorings and other ingredients can create byproducts that were never meant to be breathed into the body. Some of these chemicals are linked to inflammation, breathing issues, and long-term respiratory concerns.

Another important factor is behavior and habit formation. Even without ni****ne, va**ng can still normalize the act of smoking-like behavior—holding a device, inhaling v***r, and developing routines around it. This can make it easier for youth to transition later to ni****ne-containing products or other substances.

There’s also a hidden risk: many “ni****ne-free” products have been found through testing to contain ni****ne anyway or inconsistent ingredient labeling, meaning families may not always be getting what the package claims.

For parents, the key message is this: ni****ne-free does not mean risk-free. Staying engaged, asking questions, and talking openly with youth about why these products are still concerning can make a real difference in prevention and healthy decision-making.

April is Alcohol Responsibility Month.

Parents and educators play a powerful role in helping kids develop confidence, critical thinking, and strong decision-making skills that last a lifetime.

These conversations don’t have to be complicated or formal—often the most effective moments happen in everyday life: in the car, at the dinner table, or while watching a show together. Asking open-ended questions like “What would you do if…” or “How would you handle…” helps young people practice thinking through real-life situations before they face them.

Alcohol Responsibility Month is also a reminder that setting clear expectations, modeling healthy behavior, and staying engaged in kids’ lives all make a difference. When adults are present, consistent, and willing to listen without judgment, young people are more likely to come forward with questions and more likely to choose safer paths.

Building these skills early doesn’t just help prevent underage drinking—it supports stronger confidence, better communication, and healthier choices across all areas of life.

This month, take the opportunity to start one more conversation. It might feel small, but it can have a lasting impact.
