Many parents have heard about fentanyl but fewer know that new synthetic opioids are already replacing it in the illegal drug supply.
One fast-growing group is called “orphines.” These lab-made opioids are extremely powerful, difficult to detect, and increasingly linked to fatal overdoses in the U.S. and Canada.
Some orphines are chemically similar to fentanyl. Others may be 50–200 times stronger than he**in. A newer version detected in 2024 is reported to be about 10 times stronger than fentanyl — with no approved medical use and no known safe dose.
Since 2020, multiple types of orphines have appeared in street drugs, and new versions continue to emerge. As certain drugs become restricted internationally, others quickly take their place…making the drug supply more unpredictable and dangerous than ever.
The reality: today’s street drugs are constantly changing, often without users knowing what they’re taking.
Education, awareness, and access to life-saving interventions matter now more than ever.
