Tokata Etuŋwaŋ Wakaŋyeža Owičakiyapi was honored to provide the first session of a three-part parent and caregiver series for St. Francis Indian School, presented by Charisse Bordeaux, MS, LPC, NCC, QMHP.
The session, “Sacred Little Ones: A Lakota Approach to Social-Emotional Development,” introduced families to the foundations of social-emotional learning and connected these concepts to Lakota teachings about wakanyeja as sacred beings. Families explored how children grow through connection, safety, and belonging; how trauma and stress influence behavior; and how co-regulation supports emotional development. Practical, culturally grounded strategies were shared to help caregivers strengthen resilience, healing, and well-being within the home.
Two additional sessions will continue this series, focusing on trauma-informed Lakota caregiving, relationship building, and everyday practices that support the emotional and behavioral health of children across all ages.
Wopila tanka to St. Francis Indian School for inviting this partnership and for their ongoing commitment to supporting their students, families, and community.
