ASOPRS this month! Catching up, and looking forward to hearing the meeting recap that just dropped on . Had another memorable conference this year connecting with friends, colleagues, global health partners, and great meeting content! Dr. Will Flannery inspired and amused with his keynote, and was very personable! Honored to be an oral examiner again this year with .alison.h.watson, and have an opportunity to share updates on our overseas outreach work with the ASOPRS Foundation. Thank you for the project support, and to our industry partners that make all the difference. See you at the next meeting ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ

Excited to share a new multidisciplinary collaboration we launched this weekend - the Ukraine Facial Reconstruction Initiative (UFRI) - a project months in the making and spearheaded by facial plastic surgeons .sureshmohan and . An 18 month webinar series taught by civilian and military medicine world experts focused on current knowledge and technology for optimizing facial reconstructive surgery outcomes for the war wounded in Ukraine. This program directly supports their doctors in training โ€” and the medical teams aiding injured soldiers of the Armed Forces. This program complements the knowledge exchange and skills transfer from multiple travel teams throughout the year. Honored to help organize and develop the module on orbital reconstruction, and give the opening talk on Orbital Trauma: Surgical Approaches and Fundamentals, with case discussions by Dr. Yarema Vares (OMFS) .center. This program is in collaboration with multiple societies and NGOโ€™s including .for.ukraine .center and others. Go to to learn more. **If you are an interested oculofacial or facial plastic surgeon with expertise in trauma reconstruction โ€” this is a great opportunity to make an educational contribution to the Ukrainian cause, please reach out ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฆ

Riobamba, Ecuador ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡จ July 2025 ~ Yesterday was Non-Profit Day, and this past weekend the Global Ophthalmology Summit in Chicago. We would be remiss to not take this opportunity to thank the numerous Non-Profits and NGOโ€™s that supported through funding or logistics our recent Ophthalmology ๐Ÿ‘๏ธ surgical & teaching mission trip to the Chimborazo province of central Ecuador - bringing strabismus (ocular alignment surgery) and oculofacial plastics (eyelid, tear duct, periocular and facial reconstruction) to sustainably improve access to care for indigenous populations in the Andes. Huge thank you to the Partners for Andean Community Health, FIBUSPAM Foundation, AMB Foundation, ASOPRS Foundation, Dox Foundation, Making a Difference Foundation, SEE International, and Americares - all for the generous and timely support to make this endeavor possible. This was our 4th trip to Riobamba since 2019, each year has seen continued gains for the mission program and its reach, and I look forward to its growth in the years ahead. Global Ophthalmology is a collaboration made possible with Foundation and NGO support - along with individual donors and industry that partner with us directly - so thank you! We are grateful to continue this work and shepherd these goals forward - our new team: Dr. Lakshmi Swamy (Pediatric Ophthalmology), Dr. Caroline Chung (ASOPRS Fellow), Suki Tanaka CRNA, our student volunteers, and our incredible host team of doctors, nurses, staff and volunteers at Hospital FIBUSPAM. Gracias y nos vemos proximo aรฑo ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿผ - more photos to follow soon from our mission week.

Global Surgery Day 05.25.25 โ€” A 2015 World Health Assembly resolution recognized the importance of increasing worldwide access to safe, effective, and timely surgical care. Despite a decade of progress, it is estimated that over 5 billion people in the world still lack basic access to safe surgical care. This , I am recognizing the tireless efforts of The Virtue Foundation and my friend and mentor, Dr. Ebby Elahi in advancing access to surgical care, education, and sustainability through the Mongolia Health Initiative. May 2015 with VF also marked my first overseas surgical mission trip (โžก๏ธ sharing few photos), a truly formative experience that changed my perspective on medicine and โฉ๏ธ laid foundations for me to later collaborate with a number of NGOโ€™s in developing global programs.
The VF Team is soon departing for the 2025 Mongolia Surgical & Teaching mission trip ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‘๐ŸผThough Dr. Elahi has famously said โ€œit will all be worth it even if one person can be helpedโ€ the reality is the program has helped restore sight for thousands of patients in the 15+ years of partnership with the incredible host team we have had the good fortune of working with. Iโ€™ll add to his words my own thoughts on Global Medicine: One person cannot do everything, but everyone can do something. See you out there โœŒ๐Ÿผ

Our crown jewel ๐Ÿ’Ž Another great Spring ASOPRS Meeting in the books. Learned so much from enlightened talks and engaging panels by my colleagues in Oculofacial plastic surgery. An informative keynote update on the science of Ocularistry, an art form ๐Ÿ‘๏ธ crucial to patient rehabilitation that I have appreciated so much more through our work in Ukraine. Many good laughs and entertaining moments throughout the days. Could not have asked for better temps and a chance to venture out into the countryside of Napa and Sonoma ๐Ÿท Great to hear about all the initiatives the Society and our Foundation are involved with, and honored to give the membership update on our work in the Global Outreach Committeeโ€ฆ more to come. Hard to believe my very first Spring Meeting was 20 years ago (May 2005) on the backdrop of the Grand Tetons - I was the only fellow there and so warmly welcomed! Some still say that meeting was one of the best. While the Society has grown, the spirit of this smaller gathering remains truly the same - we are so fortunate! Congrats to the new inductees and to Wendy Lee and Mike Yoon on a fantastic venue at Silverado and the conference lineup. See you soon โœˆ๏ธ

Doctor of Medicine ๐ŸŽ“ Twenty-five years ago today, I walked the stage at Lincoln Center with my classmates as we collectively became graduates of the (Icahn) Mount Sinai School of Medicine. A month later I shipped off to Honolulu HI for my PGY1 Prelim Medicine Year - little did I know that year would be one of the formative experiences to later spark my passion for and . Medicine has given me all the joys, frustrations, challenges, and rewards of a Life Calling. So thankful for my Mom MD who inspired me, my Brother MD who has shared this journey with me, Raina who had the strength to be the โ€œmedical spouseโ€, my mentors who guided me - and this career in Oculofacial Plastic Surgery that has taken me to the most fascinating places and connected me with the best people, dedicated professionals, and authentic experiences. Grateful to the patients and their families who have entrusted me with their care ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿผ And yes, fact (see banner in photo 2) around the year 2000, during a transitional period when hospital and medical school mergers were all the rage in NYC, Mount Sinai became part of New York University - and NYU briefly had 2 medical schools ๐Ÿ˜† Thank you to everyone who has been a part of this remarkable journey.
