Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society RJOS promotes the professional growth and leadership of female Orthopaedic surgeons and advances the

THE RUTH JACKSON ORTHOPAEDIC SOCIETY (RJOS) was founded in 1983 as a support and networking group for the growing number of women orthopaedic surgeons. The women at the first meeting felt that there were many common problems confronting them, which could best be solved by pooling resources. These range from sharing technical solutions for practice problems to how to survive motherhood and orthopaedic practice/residency at the same time. The RJOS began with 42 women and has grown to a membership of more than 600. The majority is from North America, with international female orthopaedists included. The membership is comprised of practicing orthopaedic surgeons, residents, fellows, and medical students. With these varied perspectives, RJOS offers a woman's viewpoint on the rewards and shortcomings of a career in orthopaedics. For the medical student, resident and fellow there is a mentoring program to offer guidance as well as practical suggestions for choosing and completing an orthopaedic residency. Those members considering a first job, a fellowship or a career change can be linked through the Mentoring Committee with someone experienced in those areas.

Today we proudly celebrate the birthday of our founder and fearless leader, Dr. Ruth Jackson, a woman whose courage, conviction, and pioneering spirit reshaped the future for generations of women in orthopaedics.

“We stand on the shoulders of the Giants that came before us. Ruth Jackson is our foundational leader who paved the way for all of us.”
– RJOS President, Jennifer Weiss, MD

Dr. Jackson’s legacy is not just history, it is the pathway on which our entire community stands. Because of her determination and vision, we have a society committed to supporting, elevating, and empowering women in orthopaedics every step of the way.

This week, we opened registration for our 2026 Annual Meeting on March 2 in New Orleans, where our theme Paving the Way honors the spirit and courage Dr. Jackson embodied throughout her extraordinary life.

We look forward to gathering together in New Orleans to continue building the foundation she laid and to strengthen the path forward for the next generation.

We are proud to spotlight Dr. Micah Sinclair, recipient of the 2025 RJOS Alexandra J. Kirkley, MD, Academic Traveling Fellowship, generously sponsored by Zimmer Biomet.

Dr. Sinclair, a pediatric hand surgeon at Shriners Children’s Northern California and University of California Davis, completed her fellowship at Ganga Hospital in Coimbatore, India, under the mentorship of Dr. Raja Sabapathy.

Dr. Sinclair reflects, “My goal was to incorporate what I learned into our protocols for pediatric hand injuries at UC Davis, supporting patients and caregivers through a more patient-centered approach to upper extremity vascular injuries.”

During her two-week experience, Dr. Sinclair achieved all her goals and more.

“There was incredible academic collaboration through morning conferences and rounds, thoughtful discussions throughout the day, highly skilled and successful surgeries, mentorship, and warm friendships,” she shared. “It was hard to leave at the end of my time. However, it was made easier knowing I’ll return in February 2026 for the World Congenital Hand Symposium hosted by Ganga Hospital.” She adds, “I sought this opportunity at a pivotal point in my career, as I transitioned to a new institution and worked to build structure and excellence in pediatric trauma care. Observing care in such a high-volume, expert setting was invaluable, and I’m deeply grateful to RJOS and Zimmer Biomet for making it possible.”
