Last week, the National Association of County Engineers (NACE) held its annual conference in Arlington, Texas, bringing together county engineers from across the country to collaborate on infrastructure challenges and opportunities. ACPA was actively engaged throughout the event, connecting with attendees at the ACPA booth in the exhibit hall.

While concrete pavements can sometimes be overlooked by county agencies, many states — including Iowa, Minnesota, and others — have successfully leveraged concrete pavements and overlays to deliver durable, long-lasting, and low-maintenance roadway solutions. ACPA was proud to highlight these successes and share how concrete can help counties achieve resilient and cost-effective.

The ACPTP program recently released a third final report – ACPTP 2021-2, Performance Engineered Mixtures for Airfield Pavements.

The project introduces a performance-engineered mixture (PEM) framework designed to improve the construction and durability of slip-formed airfield pavements. Through extensive laboratory and field testing of more than 100 mixtures, researchers established reliable methods to evaluate vibration response, edge slump resistance, and overall performance. The study identified the Airfield Tarantula Curve as a highly effective tool, accurately predicting performance issues in 92% of mixtures—outperforming traditional approaches. In addition, the project provides practical guidance on mixture design, quality control, and implementation strategies. These findings offer a path forward for integrating PEM techniques into industry practices and future FAA specifications.

Join us as we Go Orange to show support for work zone safety! April 20-24 is National Work Zone Awareness Week and a good reminder for drivers to please slow down when traveling through highway work zones. Struck-by incidents are one of the Fatal Four leading causes of death—and THE leading cause of nonfatal injuries—in the industry. Let’s work together to protect the lives of workers and drivers alike. Slow down. Stay alert. Safe actions save lives!
