St. Edmond's Home for Children

St. Edmond's Home for Children St. Edmond’s Home serves medically fragile children with a diagnosis of severe or profound intelle Edmond’s was the first Catholic home of its kind in America.

Edmond’s Home was founded in 1916 by Archbishop Edmond Prendergast under the auspices of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. The Archbishop encouraged the Philadelphia Catholic Community to establish a home to meet the needs of children affected by the polio epidemic. The home originated at 44th Street and Haverford Avenue in Philadelphia and was formally dedicated on December 8, 1916, on the feast of the Immaculate Conception. The home was administered by the Sisters of Bon Secours whose order was founded for the purpose of caring for the sick. As polio was eradicated St. Edmond’s focused on caring for children with intellectual and physical disabilities. In 1956, the original home was replaced by a larger home in Rosemont, Radnor Township; the beautiful campus could now offer a multi-sensory environment and state-of-the-art facilities and equipment. In 1987 St. Edmond’s Home was licensed as an Intermediate Care Facility/Intellectual Disabilities (ICF/ID) by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Today, St. Edmond’s serves children diagnosed with severe and profound disabilities who are also very medically fragile. Committed staff, sensitive to the needs of each of the 44 precious children, carry on the fine tradition of compassionate, quality care. This tradition is a tribute to the legacy of the Sisters of Bon Secours, the Sisters of Mercy and the Daughters of Saint Mary of Providence who staffed the facility over the years.

As DSP Recognition Week comes to an end, we would like to thank our amazing DSP's with some words of recognition from our families!

"The DCPs at St. Edmond’s are some of the most caring and loving individuals I have ever met. They approach their work as if each child in their care is their own. They learn the nuances of each child, and are critical to their care and their well being. My daughter is always impeccably dressed with her hair carefully styled. I rely on her DCPs to let me know how she's doing and what she might need since I can't be there all the time. I don't know how St. Edmond’s could provide such a loving, healthy, secure, and comfortable environment for my child without the talent and heart of the DCPs. Thank you from the bottom of my heart."
- Molly W.

Words cannot express how much we appreciate and trust all of the direct support staff at St. Edmond's. These are people who we have now entrusted with the care, the development and most importantly, the protection of our daughter. Their compassion, their professionalism and their care has always been outstanding. We would shout from the highest mountain, how wonderful all of you are!
- Sue and Marc L.

The Direct staff at St Edmonds have a part of helping raise and care for our son Dalton for 12 years now. What that means to us is hard to put into words. Without them our lives would be dramatically different. With his level of disabilities , the job of caring for him is physically demanding . The staff at St Ed’s is our expanded family. A family that we trust and love to help us give Dalton the best possible life he can have. We are grateful for their giving and loving spirits and all that they do everyday without ever thinking of themselves. Through the pandemic , when we could not see him they stepped in and took full responsibility. Full responsibility at a time that was scary and unknowing and put their own lives at risk to take care of our son. For that and all that they do everyday my heart is forever grateful for all of them. I believe it takes a village to raise children , especially a child such as Dalton. This we have found at St Edmonds. Thank you to all of you that do the work every day with a smile on your face and so much love for our son in your heart❤️ We truly are blessed to have you all!
Love,
The Carey’s
