AI in the Cath Lab: At St. Francis Hospital, interventional cardiologists are using the most advanced innovation available to treat patients with Coronary Artery Disease. Physicians have been using HeartFlow's newest plaque analysis software for several months – this is AI generated technology that helps heart teams to plan ahead of procedures. According to Dr. Evan Shlofmitz, Director, Intravascular Imaging, “This emerging technology advances the imaging to a level of precision where we know exactly what a blockage looks like before operating on a patient. At St. Francis Hospital, we are among the first in the nation to use this technology to treat patients.” HeartFlow has been in use at St. Francis Hospital for several years.

Leaders on a Global Stage: In October, the Interventional Cardiology team transmitted a successful case of BASILICA as a Live Case to TCT (the biggest interventional cardiology conference in North America). Dr. Jaffar Khan, Director, Cardiovascular Innovation Services, explains, “Being selected as a live case site for TCT is a rare honor and only a handful of leading centers from around the world are selected. Here’s a picture of the whole team in the OR at the conclusion of the case.”

Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH)—a thickening of the heart’s main pumping chamber—can be a sign of high blood pressure or other heart conditions. A Coronary CTA is a noninvasive scan that shows the heart’s arteries and can assess hard and soft plaque—including “unstable” plaque that can lead to heart attacks. Ask your doctor if it’s right for you if you have chest symptoms, shortness of breath, an abnormal stress test, or heart risk factors. At St. Francis, we use the latest photon-counting detector CT. In August, the Heart Failure team marked their 100th LVAD procedure. An LVAD, or Left Ventricular Assist Device, is a surgically implanted mechanical pump that helps the heart's left ventricle to pump blood. This happens when a patient has severe heart failure – when the heart is too weak to pump on its own. The program is led by Dr. Edward Lundy, Surgical Director of the Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) Program. Congratulations to this dedicated cardiology team!
