Our 2025 Year in Review:

St. Francis was ranked by U.S. News in seven adult specialties: heart & vascular surgery (the only hospital on Long Island to be nationally ranked for heart & vascular surgery 18 times by U.S. News); diabetes & endocrinology; gastroenterology & GI surgery; geriatrics; orthopedics; pulmonology & lung surgery; and urology. St. Francis was also rated as High Performing in the high-acuity specialty of Neurology & Neurosurgery. We received The American College of Cardiology (ACC) HeartCARE Center designation for three consecutive years, becoming the only ACC HeartCARE Center™ in the five boroughs of New York City, Long Island and Westchester, and one of only two HeartCARE Centers™ statewide.

We achieved a 26th “A” grade for safety from the Leapfrog Group, a fourth consecutive Leapfrog Top Teaching Hospital rating, our sixth five-star quality rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. We also obtained our fifth consecutive Magnet designation for nursing excellence—including Magnet with Distinction status – the first ever conferred upon a New York State hospital.

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,

“Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.” So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising Godfor all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

A message from Dr. Chuck Lucore, President, St. Francis Hospital:

“As we celebrate the holidays and look forward to the promise of a New Year, I’m reminded of all we have accomplished in 2025 and how our teams dedication, generosity, and belief in St Francis Hospital and Heart Center has made it possible. Our community’s support strengthens everything we do. It allows us to deliver extraordinary care, advance ground breaking clinical research, support our colleagues and develop the next generation of Catholic Health leaders.

At St Francis Hospital, we strive every day to make the aspiration of outstanding healthcare a reality. Although the challenges of assuring good health and providing exceptional care are significant, our team work brings us closer to a healthier Long Island every day.

Our commitment to improving health and wellness on the Island has never been stronger. Thank you for all that you do to support St Francis Hospital and Heart Center to be the best place to receive care, work and practice medicine. It has been a very good year, and I am deeply grateful for everyone’s support.

Peace and all good!”

On Tuesday, our Main Chapel was illuminated with candlelight, and the angelic voices of the St. Francis Hospital community echoed throughout the room. We started what we hope will be a new St. Francis Hospital tradition, Nine Lessons and Carols. Our Main Chapel was full - the service was streamed on Channel 96 for our patients and clinical staff, who could not attend in person. Participants held battery operated candles, listened to readings that tell the Christmas story, and sang popular Christmas hymns. We are forever grateful to Manny Wilfred, PT, DPT, PhD, Director of Physical, Occupational and Speech Language Pathology, for initiating this event.

Special thanks to Artie Bretton, AVP, Food and Nutrition, for being our entrance soloist and in lending us in song. We are grateful to all of our volunteer singers and readers, including Tiffany Wickes-DeMillio, AVP, Safety and Reliability, Catholic Health, and her musically talented mom, Stara, at the piano. Special thanks to Deacon Daniel, Sr. Pauline Gilmore, FMM, and Dr. Charles Lucore for their guidance, support and message to our SFH community.

The interventional cardiology team at St. Francis Hospital & Heart Center enrolled their first patient in the Acolyte CTO-PCI Study this month. St. Francis is the third hospital in the world to utilize this technology. The Acolyte OCT guided re-entry catheter system uses advanced intravascular imaging, to treat patients with completely closed vessels inside the heart (CTO’s). These patients experience persistent symptoms, even after medical therapy. These blockages deprive the heart of oxygen, causing symptoms including chest pain, shortness of breath, and fatigue. Dr. Ziad Ali, Principal Investigator for the study at St. Francis, explains, “The device provides real-time visualization of a consistent blockage in the heart, allowing for guidewire placement in the blocked vessel. This precision leads to enhanced safety in an otherwise higher risk revascularization, aimed at restoring the blood flow within the artery.” Pictured in the photo: Dr. Evan Shlofmitz, Director of Intravascular Imaging, St. Francis Hospital & Heart Center, Dr. Jeff Moses, Chairman of Cardiology, Catholic Health’s Good Samaritan University Hospital, Dr. John Simpson (Founder and CEO of Simpson Interventions), Dr. Ziad Ali, Director of the DeMatteis Cardiovascular Institute, St. Francis Hospital, and Dr. Allen Jeremias, Director of Interventional Cardiology Research and Associate Director, Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, St. Francis Hospital.
