There's so much fake information about protein out there, but here are the two silliest!

The first one, and the most ridiculous one in my opinion, is that too much protein can damage your kidney. Most Americans are actually deficient in protein. Being afraid to eat protein because you think it is going to harm your health can actually harm your health! Don't be afraid to eat protein!

Another silly one is that you need to have protein within 30 minutes of your workout to get the benefit. This started after a research article was released years ago that showed that there MAY be an increase in protein synthesis when consuming whey protein within 30 minutes of a workout. The results they saw were so slight that it would be insignificant in the long run. Tons of research studies since then, though, have shown that you have an increased rate of protein synthesis for 24 hours after your workout is over (not just 30 minutes), so trying to chug a protein shake as soon as your workout is over is just not worth the inconvenience in my opinion, as long as you are eating enough protein throughout the rest of the day.

What’s the deal with squatting barefoot?

I’m sure you’ve seen someone squatting barefoot-whether it be at the gym or on social media. But why? What is it even good for?

1. You have 400,000 sensory receptors in your feet. Wearing shoes numbs these receptors! When they’re able to fully feel the floor and where your feet are in space, you’re able to active more muscles for a more balanced and table squat, leading to more gains and more power.

2. Barefoot squats strengthen the smaller muscles in your feet that get weak over time with shoe-wearing. Lifting barefoot allows us to build stronger, more resilient feet, that allows us to generate more strength and power while lifting.

3. It allows your toes to spread out! Typical shoes compress our feet and toes together-which leads to sub-optimal gait and performance. Optimal toe splay allows for the foot to grow into a strong structure and provide stability for the entire body, again-leading to better muscle activation and more gains down the road.

All of these things ultimately lead to having a stronger, more balanced and symmetrical squat.

Studies show that when muscle activity was much higher in those who were squatting barefoot than compared with shoes. Try doing a set of squats barefoot and feel the connection developing between the feet and body immediately.

This can help prevent muscle imbalances, )being overly “tight” or “weak” on one side vs. the other—something I see daily). Better muscle recruitment=less likelihood of overusing one muscle group=less likelihood of developing injury.

Have I convinced you to try barefoot squatting yet?! Send this to someone who could benefit from this!

Do your feet need to be adjusted?!

Each foot is made up of 26 bones and 30 joints. Did you know every single one of those joints can be adjusted?

When people are walking on misaligned or restricted feet all day, problems can happen in other areas. Abnormal forces are sent up the ankles, the knees, hips, and up the spine.

Sometimes people with chronic back pain, hip tightness, or knee pain notice a huge relief after getting their feet adjusted.

Do you need this in your life?!

Do you want to lose weight, but being in pain is preventing you from working out?

Here’s why you should see a chiropractor to help you get out of pain and back In to the gym:

Chiropractic adjustments (the cracks you hear) unlock stiff and restricted joints. Restoring the mobility back into the joint can result in an immediate change in pain.

Adjustments also correct minor misalignments in the spine (known as subluxations). When a joint is subluxated, it not only causes pain, but it also causes neurological dysfunction in the area, leading to an impaired healing process, which then leads to more pain. It essentially creates a downward snowball effect.

Sports chiropractors can also evaluate how you’re moving! They can evaluate how you’re lifting and performing certain movements. Incorrect movement patterning can cause muscular imbalances and other issues which can eventually lead to pain or an increased likely hood of injury in the future. In the case of an already injured muscle, we can prescribe rehab exercises to get the injured tissues stronger and more resilient.

We not only adjust the joints of the spine and extremities, but we can also provide soft tissue mobilization, such as cupping or Graston (muscle scraping), which can help relieve muscle tension and soreness, and restore mobility in the muscles and tendons!

While back pain is caused by so many different things, 1 thing that remains consistent is that when there are adhesions, scar, tissue, or fascial restrictions present, there will almost always be pain.

Normal, healthy tissue will have a nice round appearance while being cupped. As you can see in the first image, those are not nice and round! The tissue is restricted either by scar tissue or other things that have developed in the tissue causing it to lose its mobility! The person in this image has a long history of back pain and what she describes a "tight" feeling. It's no surprise that her cup marks look like this!

There could be lots of reasons why this is happening, but the best way to get rid of it, or prevent it from happening in the first place, is to see a practitioner qualified and capable of helping restore the tissue's normal range of motion!

Did you know that everyone's squat looks different and that's okay?! You don't have to force yourself upright while doing a back squat, or point your toes out if it uncomfortable.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Sure, there are basic form rules that everyone should be following to ensure they don't get injured, but as far as squat stance goes-find one that's comfortable for you and pick it.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When squatting with a barbell, a key thing to remember is that the weight of the barbell should be in line with the mid foot (see picture for details). If you have longer femurs, you may have to bend over more to perform a proper squat and that's totally okay and not bad for your back.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you have shorter femur's, you can stay a lot more upright to keep the weight of the barbell over your mid foot.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It's okay if your squat looks different than the person who's squatting next to you in the gym, in fact, it's totally normal!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What's not normal during a squat is pain, so if that is something you're struggling with, then DM me to set up an appointment and we can figure out what's going on!

MYTH BUSTING:

Have you ever been told that your poor posture is the reason for your pain?
That long told piece of information is what millennials would say “fake news”
People who slouch all day may experience pain, sure, but people who sit with what we could call “picture perfect posture” all day, will also probably experience some pain.

Research shows that it’s not posture itself that causes pain, but its the lack of movement. Taking breaks throughout the day to move your joints will make a huge difference in your pain levels. .

Now, you probably don’t want to LOOK like you’re slouching all day, so if you want to work on your posture, then by all means, go right ahead. I do posture exercises myself. But know that it is more for aesthetics and is not going to be a magic cure for all of your back pain.

Have you ever been told that your back pain is because of your poor posture? Send me me message so we can work together for an actual solution!
