Lately as I reflect back on my decades of being a therapist, I’ve asked myself questions.
What are some of the most important skills that a person needs to learn in therapy? What are the behaviors that people managing their personal growth with a therapist need to use in order to heal?
Qualified therapist spend years in training and continue to develop their knowledge and expertise in how to help people heal. We also spend time looking at what character strengths that are necessary in healing. In short good therapist believe in the inner potential of each person that they have the honor of working with and do their best to help develop that inner world so that they can thrive and be successful.
I think it’s important for each person that considers going to therapy or that is in therapy. They have a discussion with their therapist about how that professional is going to help you reach your potential and developed the skills to succeed in life. Of course, part of what we do as Therapist is to help people overcome past trauma and to evaluate how to use your inner wisdom more often but it’s worth a discussion with your therapist or potential therapist to find out how they view healing and what they bring to the table that they believe will help in the process.
Successful therapy does require an inquisitive mind on the part of the person seeking help, and they skillful perception of our healing can be facilitated on the part of the Therapist.
All good therapy in my opinion involves a process that helps you develop your inner resources. Relying more on your intuition and the connection with something bigger than yourself in my opinion are a great part of the process of healing.
