Happy fourth SHOCKaversary to the Cardiogenic Shock Program at Heart Hospital of New Mexico at Lovelace Medical Center (HHNM)!
Today, we celebrated four years of the Shock Program and honored the more than 436 lives that have been saved since its inception. We invited one of our patients, Donna Lucero โ along with her wife and caregiver, Brenda โ to reunite with the care team who saved her life after going into cardiogenic shock.
Cardiogenic shock is a life-threatening condition in which the heart is in a low cardiac output state, resulting in end-organ hypo-perfusion and hypoxia. Most commonly, cardiogenic shock happens because of a severe heart attack, but it may also occur due to other illnesses. Regardless of cause, if not treated promptly, the condition can become fatal or cause serious complications. Patients in cardiogenic shock require rapid treatment in order to ensure that blood flow to vital organs is restored.
