If you suspect your child might have autism, the path forward can feel confusing. Here is a clear roadmap.
• Step 1 — Talk to your pediatrician. Share your concerns specifically and ask for a developmental screening (M-CHAT is common for toddlers)
• Step 2 — Request a referral for a comprehensive evaluation. This may include a developmental pediatrician, psychologist, speech-language pathologist, or autism specialist
• Step 3 — Gather documentation. Schools, daycares, and therapists can provide observations that support the evaluation
• Step 4 — The evaluation process. Typically includes standardized assessments, parent interviews, and clinical observation
• Step 5 — Receive the report. This will include a diagnosis if applicable, and recommendations for services
• Step 6 — Start services. With a diagnosis, you can pursue ABA therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, and school supports
• Step 7 — Contact ZEMS. We will verify your insurance, guide your intake, and have your child in therapy within 1 to 2 weeks
Save this. Every family navigating this process needs it.
