Did you know that Uganda has one of the youngest populations in the world, with a median age of around 16–17 years? A young and rapidly growing population also means a growing need for safe, accessible surgical care and trained healthcare professionals.

We’re excited to share that we will be back in Uganda at the end of this month to deliver the BoBC course once again. This way we continue our collaboration and commitment to strengthening surgical capacity. 🌍

🌍 International Women’s Day 2026!💐

Around the world, women are at the heart of healthcare, as physicians, researchers, students, and leaders. Their dedication drives innovation, strengthens health systems, and improves access to care for communities everywhere.

According to The Lancet, approximately 75% of the global health workforce is female. However, women remain underrepresented in leadership and higher-status roles such as physicians and health managers, despite their major presence in the sector.

At Global Surgery Amsterdam, we believe that empowering women in global health and surgery is key to building a future where safe and timely surgical care is accessible to all.

Today we celebrate all women all across the world. Thank you to those who make a difference and reaffirm our commitment to a more inclusive and equitable future in global health.

Basics of Open Fracture course 2026!

32 residents in plastics, global health, trauma surgery and orthopedics came together to strengthen their expertise in open fracture management during the Dutch edition of the Basics of Open Fractures Course 🦴

Through expert lectures, team-based learning and hands-on wetlab sessions, participants were guided through the complete pathway of open fracture care. Learning universal treatment principles applicable across different settings worldwide. 🌍

With our project ‘Anesthesia Knowledge Without Limits’, we’re building a free, mobile-friendly learning platform for anesthesia providers in low resource settings. Developed together with Tanzanian and by strengthening their local training and access to knowledge, we’re helping make surgery safer — because there is no safe surgery without safe anesthesia.

This is why “safe surgery + safe anesthesia” matters. 💛

5 billion people still don’t have access to safe, affordable surgical and anesthesia care. We can’t solve that overnight — but as our trainer Estomih Mduma said:

“Small steps, made frequently and consistently, can make big things happen.”

In the past weeks, our BASICS programme delivered 10 multi-day courses in 4 countries, reaching ~200 healthcare workers — in burn care, open fractures, anesthesia, and teacher training.

December is de maand van geven ✨ sluit het jaar af met een gift die levens redt!

Bij Global Surgery Amsterdam zetten we ons in voor een wereld waarin iedereen toegang heeft tot essentiële chirurgische zorg. Samen werken we aan duurzame oplossingen met blijvende impact. 🌍

In het afgelopen jaar organiseerden we 16 cursussen in 5 landen. Daarbij richten we ons op urgente en veelvoorkomende uitdagingen, zoals brandwonden en open botbreuken.

Toch hebben wereldwijd nog altijd 5 miljard mensen geen toegang tot veilige en tijdige chirurgische zorg.

Een bijzonder hoogtepunt in 2025 was onze Basics of Anesthesia-cursus. Er bestaat geen veilige chirurgie zonder veilige anesthesie.

The past week from December 8 to 12 marked the first Global Health Week organised by the Amsterdam UMC Global Health Education Platform (AGHEP) 🌍

The week focused on training, education and capacity building, featuring four interactive lectures in collaboration with partners from Malawi, Ghana and Sri Lanka.
Topics included international affairs, training & capacity building, pediatrics and complex obstetrics, highlighting the importance of global collaboration in healthcare education.

One world, one standard of care. Also here in the Netherlands good care starts with the basics. Because true equality in healthcare begins with what we all agree is essential.

Burn injuries are far more common than most people realise. Not only in low-resource settings, but also here in the Netherlands. For young children, a simple cup of hot tea remains the leading cause of severe burns. A brief moment of distraction, a cup left on the edge of a table, a curious child pulling themselves up, and life can change within seconds.

In countries such as Uganda, children are still falling into open cooking fires and the consequences are even more severe, with limited access to specialised care and long recovery trajectories. The settings are different, but the vulnerability and impact are the same.

Prof. Dr. Annebeth de Vries, the Netherlands’ first Professor of Paediatric Burn Care, expert of the Basics of Burn Care project of Global Surgery Amsterdam, is dedicated to addressing this burden. Through research, prevention, education and collaboration, she works to ensure that every child has access to better treatment, better outcomes and a future with fewer scars.

We are incredibly proud of her inspiring inaugural lecture and the leadership she brings to this mission, both in the Netherlands and worldwide.
