As Central Texas heads into peak bluebonnet season, it’s also peak snake activity—and safety matters now more than ever. We’re here for you with 24/7 emergency services with on-site Level II trauma services, so you can feel confident knowing expert care is always close by.

While most snakes aren’t venomous, encounters can happen—especially when stepping off trails for that perfect photo. We’re proud to see Dr. Kevin Smith, emergency physician at St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center, featured in the Austin American-Statesman sharing expert guidance on snake bite safety during wildflower season.

Dr. Smith reminds us:
✔️ Stay aware of your surroundings
✔️ Keep kids and pets close
✔️ Wear closed-toe shoes and protective clothing
✔️ If bitten, stay calm and seek care at a hospital-based ER

And most importantly—don’t try to handle or move a snake.

Snake bites are rare and treatable, but quick, informed action makes all the difference while we enjoy the beauty of Texas spring!

Jonathan Goetz was playing pickleball at a community center when he suddenly collapsed. In an instant, a routine night turned into an emergency.
Nearby was Tyler Hobson, manager of Women's Services at St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center. She wasn’t on duty, she was there as a parent, but when she saw the crowd gathering, she moved toward the scene.

Jon had no pulse and wasn’t breathing.

Tyler immediately began CPR, directed others to call 911 and helped use an AED until EMS arrived. For about eight minutes, she didn’t stop.
And because of her quick actions, Jon is alive — walking miles a day, prioritizing his health and grateful for a second chance. “Every single day is a blessing.”

Stories like this remind us:
✨ Heroes don’t always wear capes—they show up.
✨ Skills like CPR save lives.

Let this be your sign to learn CPR. You never know when you could be someone’s second chance at life. CPR classes are taught around Central Texas, through the American Red Cross, CPR Resources, CPR Training Austin and Austin-Travis County EMS. You also can take them online at https://rdcrss.org/4dRxrkL.

👏 Thank you, Tyler, for your calm leadership, strength, and heart.

In a recent Austin American-Statesman feature, Shirley Powers’ journey shows the impact of bringing advanced blood cancer care closer to home.

After years of managing chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) through treatment, remission and recurrence, Shirley turned to the Sarah Cannon Transplant and Cellular Therapy Program at St. David’s South Austin Medical Center. There, her care team helped her pursue CAR T-cell therapy—an option for certain adults with CLL. Today, she has no evidence of cancer.

Our program, part of the Sarah Cannon Cancer Network, includes a FACT-accredited blood and marrow transplant program, along with specialized teams and infrastructure for complex care. If you or a loved one is facing a blood cancer diagnosis, you don’t have to navigate it alone. Learn more about our program here: https://bit.ly/40VocbO

At 33, Lillian Angelle was living the life she loved in Austin—working in the music industry and staying active as a runner. Then, in an instant, everything changed.

Last February, Lillian suffered a stroke.

After a week in the ICU, she arrived at St. David’s Rehabilitation Hospital unable to even sit upright on her own. Determined to regain her independence, Lillian enrolled in our Young Stroke Survivor program and committed to four hours of rehabilitation every day.

Progress came one milestone at a time. With the encouragement of her physicians and therapy team, Lillian began to believe recovery was possible.

Now, just one year after her stroke, Lillian is back to work full time and has already earned a promotion. A runner at heart, she’s setting her sights on her next goal: racing again in Austin.

Recently, Lillian returned to St. David’s Rehabilitation Hospital to visit the team who supported her through recovery—a joyful reunion celebrating how far she’s come and the road still ahead.

Losing an hour of sleep can do more than make you groggy. As we “spring forward” for daylight saving time, our bodies don’t adjust as quickly as our clocks. Dr. Stanley Wang, medical director of the Sleep Disorders Center at Heart Hospital of Austin, mentions that disruption can affect sleep quality — and sleep is closely connected to heart health.

A few smart ways to prepare:
• Start shifting your wake-up time 15 minutes earlier each day for 4 days.
• Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep.
• Avoid caffeine, alcohol and strenuous exercise within 3 hours of bedtime.

If you’re waking up tired, snoring loudly or feeling sleepy during the day, it may be time to talk with a doctor about your sleep.
