🌟 Community Health Reminder: What Parents Should Know About Pertussis (Whooping Cough) with the recent outbreaks in Austin 🌟

From your friends at CPPFM:
As we head into the colder months—when coughs and colds become more common—we want to share some important information about pertussis, also known as whooping cough. While many illnesses that cause coughing are mild, pertussis can be more serious, especially for babies and young children.

👶 What is Pertussis?
Pertussis is a highly contagious respiratory infection caused by bacteria. It starts out looking like a regular cold but can progress into severe coughing fits that make it hard for children (and even adults) to breathe.

📌 Symptoms to Watch For:
•Runny nose or mild cough in the early days
•Intense coughing spells that may end with a “whoop” sound
•Vomiting after coughing
•Difficulty catching breath
•In infants: pauses in breathing (apnea)
‼️ If you notice these symptoms, especially in a baby, please contact us right away.

🛡️ Prevention Is Key
The DTaP (for children) and Tdap (for teens & adults) vaccines are the best protection against pertussis. Keeping the whole family up to date helps protect our youngest patients who are most vulnerable.

😷 When to Wear a Mask or Stay Home
If your child has a persistent cough or cold symptoms, keeping them home and wearing a mask around others can help prevent spread—especially to infants and those with weaker immune systems.

💛 We're Here to Help
If you have questions about symptoms, vaccines, or whether your child should be seen, don’t hesitate to call us. Working together helps keep our community healthy and safe.

Stay well, everyone!

🌿 Wellness Reminder for Today

The changing seasons are here — which means colds, sniffles, and that moment you realize you’ve scheduled three things at the same time.
So here’s your gentle (but slightly sassy) check-in:
✔ Stay hydrated — yes, actual water… no, coffee doesn’t count … and neither does “iced coffee.”
✔ Wash your hands — like you’re prepping for surgery or trying to remove Cheeto dust.
✔ Prioritize sleep — scrolling at 1 a.m. does not count as “me time.”
✔ Schedule preventive visits — future you will send a thank-you card.
Your health matters every day — and we’re here to help keep your whole crew functioning properly.

🌲 Happy National Take a Hike Day! 🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️

Today is the perfect reminder to step outside, breathe some fresh air, and enjoy the beauty of nature with your family.
Regular outdoor activity isn’t just fun — it helps kids (and grown-ups!) strengthen their hearts, boost their mood, improve sleep, and reduce stress. Even a short, local trail walk can make a big difference!

👣 A few tips for families hitting the trail today:
• Choose a kid-friendly trail and take it at your own pace
• Pack water and a healthy snack
• Dress in layers and comfortable shoes
• Make it fun — play “I spy,” look for birds, or collect leaves 🍁
• Don’t forget to snap a family photo!

At CPPFM, we love supporting healthy habits for the whole family. If you’re looking for more ideas to stay active this fall, we’re always here to help!

💚 Get outside, explore, and enjoy the journey. Happy hiking! 🌄

📣 Need help finding food or formula during the SNAP funding pause?

We know this time is stressful for many families. That’s why our friends at Dell Children's Pediatric GI Department have compiled a helpful guide to local food pantries and formula assistance programs across Central Texas.
