Over the years of practice as a shoulder surgeon I have come to realize the large role that cervical radiculopathy can have in my shoulder patients. It can be the sole source of pain at times, but more often is a secondary source of pain, in addition to their shoulder pathology. As a result, I order more cervical spine MRIs than anyone in our practice (including spine providers), and my clinical team showed up in these t-shirts!
I find understanding the contribution of the cervical spine important in not only treating all sources of a patients pain, but also in setting reasonable expectations following shoulder surgery, and being able to protect the cervical spine of patients with stenosis during shoulder surgery.
