Meet Dr. William Augustus Hinton: a medical pioneer who changed the course of public health, right here in Boston.

Born in 1883 to formerly enslaved parents, William earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School in 1912 with honors. Despite his brilliant credentials, prejudice barred him from pursuing surgery at Boston-area hospitals. He refused to let those obstacles define his path.

Instead, he became an expert on syphilis while working in Boston laboratories, developing a groundbreaking diagnostic blood test that was adopted by the U.S. Public Health Service. He authored the first medical textbook written by a Black person in America. He trained countless women as laboratory technicians at Boston institutions, opening doors that had been closed to them.

In 1949, he became the first African American professor at Harvard Medical School and Harvard University, a historic achievement that paved the way for generations to come. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts honored his legacy by naming the state laboratory building after him.

Because of Dr. Hinton's tenacity and groundbreaking work, we are all better equipped to fight disease in our own communities. He walked through doors that were closed to him and held them open for those who followed. Thank you, Dr. Hinton.

Meet Mary Eliza Mahoney: America's first professionally trained Black nurse, trained right here on our Roxbury campus.

As a teenager, Mary knew she wanted to become a nurse. She started at the New England Hospital for Women and Children, the institution that would become The Dimock Center, working as a janitor, cook, washerwoman, and nurse's aide. For 15 years, she learned everything she could about nursing while doing whatever work was available to her.

In 1879, she was finally accepted into the nursing program. Out of 42 students, only 4 graduated. Mary was one of them.

Her achievement opened doors that had been closed to Black women in healthcare. She spent 40 years caring for patients across Boston and New England, then co-founded the National Association of Colored Graduate Nurses in 1908 to fight for opportunities for the next generation of Black nurses. After the 19th Amendment passed in 1920, she was among the first women to register to vote in Boston.

Today, Mary's pioneering spirit lives on in our commitment to serve our community with the same compassion, excellence, and dedication to care that defined her remarkable life.

Happy Black History Month!

February is a time to honor the resilience, achievements, and lasting impact of Black Americans throughout our nation's history.

This month, we're highlighting Black history through the incredible contributions of Black pioneers in the field of medicine. Despite facing countless barriers, they made breakthroughs that transformed healthcare—developing new treatments, advancing medical knowledge, and fighting for patients who had nowhere else to turn.

Throughout February, we'll be sharing stories of Boston medical trailblazers whose contributions and perseverance shaped the medical field as we know it and continue to benefit us all today.

Join us in this time of appreciation, remembrance, and reflection.
