Each March, Women’s History Month honors the achievements, leadership, and impact of women who have shaped our culture, communities, politics, civil rights, and societal progress. It’s both a celebration of how far we’ve come and a reminder of the work yet needed to achieve true gender equity.

The 2026 theme “Leading the Change: Women Shaping a Sustainable Future,” places a spotlight on the essential role women play in global challenges – from economic inequality to healthcare disparities.

At Whittier Street Health Center, women’s leadership is central to our mission. Under the guidance of CEO and President Frederica M. Williams Whittier has grown from a community clinic into a nationally recognized model for urban health equity, social justice, and culturally responsive care.

Whittier continues to advance women’s health and empowerment through programs including:
•Centering Pregnancy Program: Group prenatal care
•Mammography Suite: In partnership with Dana-Farber Cancer Institute
•Moms Do Care: Support for pregnant and parenting women with opioid use disorder
•Post Prison Release Program: Support for women re-entering the community
•Youth Enrichment Program: Assists women attain their goals and reach full potential
•Women for Whittier: Advocacy group to strengthen, support, and uplift women, children, and families

We honor the women who lead, inspire, and drive change as we remain committed to building a healthier and more equitable future for all.

March 10 brings attention to how HIV/AIDS continues to impact women and girls, stressing the need for prevention, testing, education, and equitable access to care. Despite progress, disparities persist – especially for Black and Latina women who face higher rates of new HIV diagnoses driven by limited access to healthcare, stigma, and societal detriments.

At Whittier Street Health Center we are committed to breaking down these barriers through:
• Confidential HIV/STI testing
• Comprehensive services for HIV prevention and treatment
• Community outreach programs to increase awareness and reduce stigma

Walk-in testing and counseling services are available Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 4:45 p.m. at 1290 Tremont Street, 3rd Floor Family Medicine Green.
We remain dedicated to ensuring that every woman and girls has access to compassionate care, accurate information, and the resources needed to protect her health.

International Women’s Day: Celebrating Women, Advancing Equality

March 8th marks International Women’s Day – a time to recognize, celebrate, and reflect on women’s achievements. And while we honor and rejoice in the political, economic, scientific, cultural, and artistic contributions of women around the world, we must also remain mindful of the challenges that persist. From pay inequity to underrepresentation, from barriers in education to disparities in healthcare, progress toward true equality remains uneven.

International Women’s Day reminds us that parity is not a women’s issue, alone. It is a societal responsibility. Today we raise our voices in celebration, even as we call out the barriers that endure and imagine a world where gender equality is assumed, not aspirational.

From our beginnings in 1933 as a well-baby clinic, Whittier Street Health Center’s focus on women’s health laid the foundation for our broader mission: advancing equality and ensuring access to care, compassion, and support for every person in our community.

Cancer Prevention Starts with You!

February is National Cancer Prevention Month, a time to focus on early detection, healthy lifestyles, and preventive care. According to the American Cancer Society, up to 50% of cancer-related deaths can be prevented through regular screenings and healthier lifestyle choices.

Take charge of your health by scheduling a screening and talking to your provider about steps you can take to reduce your cancer risk. Whittier Street Health Center is proud to collaborate with the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute to provide on-site comprehensive cancer prevention, screening, and treatment services. To learn more, please call (617) 989-3267.

"Advancing Racial Equity in the Fight Against HIV

Did you know that in 2025, Black people accounted for 39% of new HIV diagnoses in the United States? Racial disparities continue to shape access to prevention, timely diagnosis, and treatment of this virus, and Black communities bear a disproportionate burden of HIV infection and AIDS-related deaths.

At Whittier Street Health Center, closing these gaps in care is central to our mission of reducing health disparities and racial inequities in the communities we serve.

To learn more about our efforts to reduce the spread of HIV, stop by our resource table on the ground floor of the health center on February 6 to connect with a member of our IDSP Team.

Health Equity Starts With Racial Justice

Systemic racism continues to drive health disparities and unequal treatment in the health care system, leaving too many of our neighbors behind in the fight for health equity and social justice.

At Whittier Street Health Center, we're working every day to rebuild trust by providing culturally competent services, breaking down barriers to access, and recruiting a diverse network of health care professionals who reflect and connect to the lived experiences of the communities we serve. Our commitment to racial justice lies at the heart of everything we do to improve health equity and build better opportunities for all.
