Muscle fibers 👨‍🏫

An important aspect of muscle recovery our therapists understand is muscle fiber orientation.

There are two distinct types of muscle fibers used in the body. These distinctions seem to influence how muscles respond to training and physical activity, and each fiber type is unique in its ability to contract in a certain way.

Fast twitch fibers use anaerobic metabolism to create fuel, they are much better at generating short bursts of strength or speed than slow muscles, however, they fatigue more quickly.

On the other side, slow twitch fibers are more efficient at using oxygen to generate more fuel for continuous, extended muscle contractions over a long time.

It is shown that training in a particular sport long enough will change the twitch fibers to support that sport, along with reducing post-exercise soreness.👩‍🏫

Dynamic Cupping👩‍🏫

Another requested tool used by our therapists at Tri-covery is Dynamic Cupping, which is a form of decompression techniques that uses suction cups.

This decompression lifts the layers of tissue up and out to expand into the cup, allowing the strands of connective tissue and a unique form of traction to free themselves, instead of pushing into the tissue.

Vacuum decompression of the fascia is a technique we simply cannot do with our hands. It adds a valuable new dimension to our manual therapy toolbox.

Functional cupping works by applying the cups in areas followed by initiating dynamic, functional movement and affecting positive change in movement restrictions.

Once the cups are placed, treatment involves active movements of the joints followed by neuromuscular re-education to improve movement patterns and make lasting changes to the tissue. 👨‍🏫

👩‍🏫IASTM

Our therapists utilize many tools working with people, one popular tool at our disposal is Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization.

The tool edge has no give which increases pe*******on of mechanical force into the client’s tissue, which allows for a deeper more focused therapeutic stroke.

Scar tissue from injury causes new cells to lay down in a disorganized manner and this prevents muscles from lengthening properly.

The IASTM tool is used to stimulate a local inflammatory response, which starts re-absorption of excessive scar tissue and leads to a cascade of healing activities.

After this treatment and the remodeling of the scar tissue or adhesion's, the cells will become organized to better promote movement.

If you haven’t tried IASTM, speak to your Tri-Covery therapist, it is a game changer for many people and it might be for you.👨‍🏫

Kinesiology Tape👨‍🏫

When applied it increases proprioception and feedback to the muscles.

It improves your awareness, while supporting an injured area and with its ability to stretch it doesn’t restrict movement.

Use scissors to round the edges of tape to avoid the tape lifting away from the skin too early.

Apply directly over your painful area along the muscle fibers, using multiple strips if necessary.

Our therapists are certified in the use of kinesiology tape and would be glad to add a taping application to your existing appointment.

We also have RockTape available for purchase if you would like to take a roll home with you.👨‍🏫

👨‍🏫Vertebrobasilar insufficiency

Known as VBI, refers to a temporary set of symptoms due to decreased blood flow in the posterior circulation of the brain.

In the United States, 25% of strokes and transient ischemic attacks occur in the vertebrobasilar distribution.

VBI is also called the beauty parlor syndrome (leaning back in a shampoo bowl can put pressure in this area, it is best to place a small rolled up towel to cushion the back of your neck).

Dizziness is the most common complaint associated with vertebrobasilar insufficiency (VBI).

When dizziness is present you must access for the addition of any other symptoms listed below (the presence of one or more of these symptoms is enough to warrant caution and further investigation).

5D’s - Dizziness, Diplopia (blurred vision), Drop Attacks, Dysphagia (problems swallowing), Dysarthria (problems speaking).

3N’s - Nystagmus, Nausea (or vomiting), other Neurological symptoms.

If you are experiencing any discomfort, call Tri-Covery today and schedule a corrective exercise or therapy session.👩‍🏫

Charlie joins Tri-Covery after graduating from the pristine Irene’s Myomassology Institute in Southfield, MI in early 2022.

Charlie, like most of us, grew up playing sports and needed recovery work like massage and chiropractic care to help him compete at the highest level where he was able to reach his goal of wrestling state champion!

During this time is when Charlie discovered the benefits of bodywork for athletes.

Charlie specializes in therapeutic and sports massage where he likes to use many modalities such as deep tissue, trigger point, positional release, stretching and many others with the focus on reducing muscle pain.

Charlie wants people to be their best versions of themselves without having to worry about the fallout of overworked muscles or injuries.

"To help athletes achieve their dreams is my passion"!

Muscles that move the hip

Adam last week showed us the complex hip joint with his corrective exercise segment.

The hip joint is a ball and socket synovial joint, formed by a connection between the pelvis and the head of the femur. This joint is designed for stability and weight-bearing – rather than a large range of movement.

There are 6 primary movements that can be carried out at the hip joint along with the principal muscles responsible for each action.

Flexion-Lift your thigh upward in front of your body.
Hip Extension-Lift your thigh behind you.
Hip Abduction-Lift your leg out to the side, or from a squatting position, knees fall out to the side.
Hip Adduction-Bringing your thigh to the center.
Internal Rotation of the Hip-Rotate your leg in toward the mid-line of your body.
External Rotation of the Hip-Rotate your leg out away from the mid-line of your body.

If a specific muscle group is weak, painful, dominant, or tight any one of these conditions can significantly disrupt the fluidity, comfort, and metabolic efficiency of many routine movements involving both functional and recreational activities.

“If you are experiencing any discomfort, call Tri-Covery today and schedule a corrective exercise or therapy session”.
