Even when feeling at his absolute worst, Erik Schultz carried something that made him unforgettable: his humor.

Cirrhosis had pushed him into one of the hardest chapters of his life with weekly paracentesis being the only thing that brought him enough relief to breathe comfortably.

Yet, he made the hardest days feel a little less heavy, often joking about “coming in for his weekly drain‑and‑tune‑up,” or teasing whoever placed his IV with a gentle one‑liner. Through that humor, we saw his resilience.

And then it happened, a liver was available and the transplant was a success. As he healed, that spark in him grew brighter, reminding us all that resilience, humor, and world‑class medical care can create miracles.

It’s not everyday you see a patient and doctor break into a joyful dance in the waiting room. For Marie Hindee and Dr. Ishmael Jaiyesimi, nothing else could capture the moment quite so perfectly.

After battling blood cancer for 15 years, Marie received CAR-T cell therapy, a new cutting-edge treatment offered at Corewell Health Beaumont. She is now in remission.

Her message? Don’t give up hope.

It is a special gift to make others feel both seen and heard. It is even more special to do so while providing exceptional clinical care.

We are excited to honor Chelsie Dingman, BSN, with the DAISY award for her care and commitment to honoring each individual’s personal story and spirit. Congratulations, Chelsie!

⏰Daylight Saving Time is tomorrow and that lost hour of sleep can impact heart health. Here’s what to know:

Losing an hour of sleep puts stress on the heart, disrupts the body’s internal clock, and can compound risks tied to obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke. Studies show heart attacks can jump 10–24% after we “spring forward.”

The good news? A few simple steps can help protect your heart during the transition:
• Go to bed 15 minutes earlier for a few nights before the time change.
• Get bright morning sunlight to help reset your internal clock.
• Avoid caffeine and alcohol in the evening, and aim for 7–9 hours of sleep.

For more information, check out the interview Corewell Health cardiologist, Dr. Akhil Gulati, did with WWJ Newsradio 950 on how to best prepare your sleep and heart going into DST this weekend: https://www.audacy.com/wwjnewsradio/news/local/time-to-spring-forward-lose-an-hour-of-sleep

For patients and families, an exceptional hospital experience is often shaped by the people who show up with compassion during life’s most vulnerable moments. At Royal Oak hospital, two environmental services team members make a meaningful difference every day.

Patients celebrate Amanda Brown and Laporchia Dunn for their uplifting, comforting presence that sets the tone for patient recovery. They're with you, every step of the way.

Amanda and Laporchia are proof that it’s often the smallest moments that leave the biggest impression.

Sudden cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death in young athletes with 1 in 300 youth at risk. This weekend, Corewell Health will host a Student Heart Check at Hazel Park High School to screen local students aged 13-18 for undiagnosed heart conditions that could lead to sudden cardiac arrest.

Over the past 19 years, the Corewell Health Student Heart Check Program has screened over 22,000 students. Of these, 2,400 were referred to their physicians for follow-up, and 240 were identified as being at risk for heart conditions that could cause sudden cardiac arrest.

These non-invasive screenings can help ensure your students heart health. Register now on Corewell Health's official website for the upcoming student heart check on February 7.

This week, Troy High School students honored the memory of their late classmate, Bilal Ahmad, by learning the lifesaving skill of CPR from Jen Shea, manager of Corewell Health Children’s Student Heart Check.

Bilal, who tragically passed away after suffering cardiac arrest during freshman orientation last year, was known for his kindness, joy, and love for his community. As part of “Be Like Bilal” Activist Week, these students will soon pay it forward by teaching CPR to others.

February is and we hope Bilal’s story encourages families to take the next step in prevention by signing up for a free Student Heart Check at Hazel Park High School on Saturday, Feb. 7.

These screenings are free and designed to identify students who may be at risk for sudden cardiac arrest through heart and vascular screenings for youth ages 13: https://corewellhealth.org/care-and-specialties/heart-and-vascular/student-heart-check

Sai Tallapally, a senior in high school, made history as the first volunteer to receive the BEE (Be Exceptional Everyday) Award for exceptional service at Corewell Health East.

Showing courage and professionalism during a critical incident at the hospital’s main entrance, Sai assisted a wounded patient into a wheelchair and ensured a swift transport to the emergency department.

Since joining Corewell Health Wayne Hospital as a volunteer in 2024, Sai has contributed 111 hours in both hospitality and nursing areas and has distinguished himself as an exceptional member of the team. He was honored with the BEE Award which recognizes hospital team members in any role who go above and beyond to support the patient experience. Congratulations to Sai on this well-deserved achievement!

Looking ahead, Sai plans to attend college and medical school, where he is well on his way to a lasting impact in the medical field.

21,000 hearts.

That’s how many students we’ve screened so far through our free Student Heart Check.

It began in 2007 when cardiologists and care team members came together to create a community screening program aimed at identifying students who may be at risk for sudden cardiac arrest.

The program offers free heart and vascular screenings for students ages 13–18, including:
🔵 Echocardiogram
🔵 EKG
🔵 Blood pressure check
🔵 Vascular health evaluation

We partner directly with schools to schedule clinic dates throughout the year, and schools work with families to help students get registered.

The next Student Heart Check takes place Saturday, Feb. 7. Learn more and register here:
