Can you tell what I’m feeling behind my mask? 😷

A lot of kids with histories of trauma misidentify facial expressions already. Specifically, they tend to over identify anger/threat if the expression can’t be very clearly read. And that’s WITHOUT masks on.

Look at my sad face versus my angry face. There’s not much difference is there? And I was making very clear expressions under that mask.

Take some time with your kids to practice reading masked facial expressions. They can look in a mirror at themselves or look at you or you can do silly photos like I did. Point out what’s the same and what’s different. Acknowledge that some expressions look the same with a mask on and we’ll have to try to not assume if we don’t know.

Adults with masks on, get in the habit of verbalizing what you’re feeling on a regular basis when you’re around kids so they don’t have to guess. Hopefully it will lead to fewer escalations.
