Pope County EMS is deeply saddened by the tragic incident involving Pafford Emergency Medical Services in Mississippi.

Our hearts are heavy as we learn of the head on collision involving one of their ambulances while transporting a patient. We mourn the loss of the patient, and we are keeping the critically injured crew members, their families, coworkers, and all those affected in our thoughts and prayers.

Events like this impact more than just one agency or one community. They remind us how closely connected we all are and how much first responders risk every day to care for others. Behind every ambulance are families, friends, and a community that supports them.

Across state lines, the EMS community stands together in times of tragedy, and we stand in solidarity with Pafford EMS and the Mississippi communities affected by this loss.

We ask our community to join us in lifting up everyone involved, to keep first responders in your thoughts, and to continue showing the kindness and support that make our communities strong.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Pafford EMS and all those affected by this tragedy.

Employee Spotlight!

This week we’re proud to highlight one of our dedicated EMTs, who has been with Pope County EMS since November: Ryan Roberts.

Originally planning to join the fire service, Ryan discovered his true calling during EMT school ride alongs. It was during those early experiences that he felt a sense of responsibility and purpose unlike anything before. For the first time in his working life, he felt confident, comfortable, and certain that EMS was where he belonged.

After immigrating from Scotland and leaving his family behind, finding a sense of belonging was important to him. From day one at PCEMS, he was welcomed by every crew, trusted to do his job, and embraced with a level of camaraderie that quickly felt like family. That support made all the difference and reinforced why this service means so much to him.

Outside of EMS, Ryan enjoys spending time with his wife, staying connected with family and friends back home, playing Magic: The Gathering with coworkers, and relaxing with video games.

He believes one of the most important, and often overlooked, lessons in EMS is remembering that we are human. No matter how strong we may seem, talking about what we experience matters. EMS has pushed him to be better than he was yesterday and changed the way he views life, reminding him how quickly everything can change.

Being there for someone on the worst day of their life has shaped his approach to care, compassion, and connection. Sometimes, simply showing up, offering a smile, or acknowledging someone who feels invisible can make a lasting impact.

We’re thankful for Ryan and his dedication, compassion, and commitment to serving the people of Pope County.

For these reasons, and so many more, Ryan is our Employee Spotlight this week!

Pope County EMS Winter Storm & Roadway Update

The National Weather Service in Little Rock reports that today, Tuesday, January 27th, conditions will be sunny with a high near 35°F. Wind chill values may be as low as 12°F, with a west wind around 5 mph becoming calm this afternoon.
Tonight will be mostly cloudy with a low around 16°F and calm winds.

As temperatures rise today, some thawing of accumulated ice and snow is expected. However, as temperatures fall back into the teens overnight, any melted precipitation will refreeze, creating hazardous and unsafe roadway conditions.

At this time, main roadways are reported to be mostly clear, though patches of ice and snow remain. Side streets, rural roads, and access roads throughout Pope County remain covered and are hazardous and/or unsafe for travel.

If travel is necessary, Pope County EMS urges motorists to use safe winter driving techniques, including:
-Reducing speed and increasing following distance
-Avoiding sudden braking or sharp turns
-Accelerating and decelerating slowly
-Using extra caution on bridges, overpasses, and shaded areas
-Allowing additional travel time

If travel is not necessary, the safest option is to remain at home until conditions improve.

Community input is helpful as conditions change. If you encounter roadways that remain unsafe or hazardous, please consider sharing photos or descriptions in the comments below to help others stay informed. However, please do not stop in unsafe areas or put yourself at risk to take photos.

Pope County EMS will continue to monitor conditions and respond as needed. Please stay informed and use caution.
