It’s pretty common these days to hear someone say something like, “Give me facts, not feelings.” This kind of statement elevates the importance of thoughts and downplays the importance of feelings. The reality is relying only on your thoughts or only on your feelings can be problematic and can lead to many kinds of problems. It’s generally best to notice your thoughts and feelings so you can evaluate and make sense of them without being reactive to them or controlled by them.

Deeply desiring to change something about ourselves, but having difficulty doing so, is a basic human reality. Oftentimes, when we have trouble changing a habit or some aspect of us, we double-down and try pushing away the part of us that we don’t like or treat ourselves harshly. Unfortunately, this usually ends up giving the aspect we want to change more power and makes it more entrenched.

The paradox is this: When we accept ourselves as we are and realize that we don’t have to change, that is when the possibility of changing really becomes possible.
