There was once a time, up until about my freshman year of high school, where we actually had to watch the news to know what was going on. Then, during that news program, there were real commercial breaks. I hated the commercials back then, but now, I long for them. We couldn’t fast forward the TV or anything like that, so we got up and took breaks while the commercials were on. Sometimes, we’d get distracted and not even come back to the TV. I long for that, I long for anything that feels familiar to a time that once existed before technology took over. It was so peaceful yall. I wish I could have experienced that type of peace as an adult. Our nervous systems were never meant to process this much information and data. For those that want to stick around a couple minutes, read, and learn something extremely important today about your health; let me explain what this does to our physical bodies. It happened to me.
We are NOT lazy, we’re OVERSTIMULATED!! Because here’s the truth; when your mind is stressed, your body follows. Your heart rate goes up, your digestion slows down, hormones get out of balance, and your immune system weakens. Let me explain.
Our brains are constantly hit with dopamine from constant notifications all day, scrolling phones, social media, lights of any kind (especially fluorescent), advertisements, instant gratification, and NOISE. Noise can be work, TV, racing thoughts, obligations, etc. It feels good for a while, but it literally rewires our entire system, and we don’t even see it happening. It gets way harder to focus (I’m talking 15-30 min attention spans as GROWN ADULTS). We can’t stay calm (always in panic mode about the smallest things), and the saddest part; we can no longer truly enjoy simple things. We are now wired to expect things to come so fast that we can’t stay in a moment long enough to enjoy it.
With stress, our bodies release cortisol and adrenaline…CONSTANTLY! This wreaks havoc on our bodies, yall! These are fight or flight hormones meant strictly for emergencies. But ours stay high all day, every day, due to overstimulation. They start breaking your body down; horrible sleep, fast weight gain, crippling anxiety, brain fog, memory loss, mood swings, and burnout.
Then add emotional overload on top of all of this! Logging into social media and seeing bad news, drama, or endless comparisons. Your emotions either succumb to numbness or burnout, and it becomes harder to connect with yourself or others in real life. That, my friends, is how we become socially isolated.
Your nervous system never gets to relax, so you live in survival mode…wired, tired, and emotionally drained. Over time, that constant stress can feel like anxiety or depression, but it’s really your body screaming for rest. Then, when you finally say “enough is enough, I can’t go anymore”…YOU GET SO DAMN SICK!!!! THIS IS WHY!!!! The cortisol and adrenaline are no longer there to mask the detriment that your body was and is going through. Then, the damage is done. Your body begins to shut down, fighting now to simply keep you alive.
All of this because of technology and modern day slavery.
We have to put the phones down, turn the TV off, establish a healthy work/life balance (yes, you have the power to make this happen), and GO OUTSIDE!!!!! Have conversations in person or on the phone, minimize texting and talk more. Start a gardening club, start a crafting group, learn about backyard farming, pick up hobbies that don’t require technology. Real-world connection regulates the brain far more effectively than screen time.
We can fix this!
1. Set Digital boundaries: No screen time for mornings/evenings, turn off push notifications.
2 . Sensory resets: Nature, silence, baths, candlelight, soft music, breathwork.
3. Nervous-system healing: Reiki, meditation, yoga, EMDR, somatic therapy.
4. Mono-tasking: Do one thing at a time…and do it SLOWLY.
5. Community and embodiment: Connect with real HUMANS…face to face!!
Our bodies need peace, silence, and time to feel safe again; to once again feel like a functional human. Take care of yourselves, please.
Sincerely Guys,
Candice
