As part of our Holiday Heroes series, we’re proud to spotlight Amber McComas, a certified medical assistant at FryeCare Cardiology - Rutherford, whose compassion and dedication make a lasting impact on patients every day. Amber’s role keeps the clinic running smoothly from chart prep and rooming patients to manual blood pressure checks, ECGs, heart monitors, medication reconciliation, prior authorizations, and answering patient questions.

What Amber loves most about her job is the relationships she’s built over the past four years. Patients greet her with smiles, ask about her children, and trust her to be there for them. Amber takes pride in ensuring each patient leaves the clinic reassured, heard, and confident that their questions have been answered. “If no one else is here for them,” she says, “I am.” That sense of responsibility and care is what motivates her every day.

She’s firmly on Team Wait Until December when it comes to decorating, loves holiday movies (especially The Grinch), and will always choose baking cookies over wrapping gifts. Amber believes in spreading kindness through something as simple as a smile, knowing it can make a difference in someone’s day — especially during the holidays. This season is deeply meaningful for Amber. Her favorite moments are simply being with her daughters, cherishing time together, and remembering her son, who will always hold a special place in her heart.

Continuing our Holiday Heroes series by highlighting Brittany Ives, CMA, and Clinical Lead at Rutherford Premier Women’s Care. Brittany plays a key role in the clinic, handling surgery scheduling, prior authorizations, insurance coordination, labs, and blood draws — all while stepping in wherever she’s needed as a clinic floater.

What Brittany loves most about her work is knowing that patients receive quality women’s health services close to home. She finds fulfillment in helping patients get surgeries approved, medications processed, and care coordinated, knowing those behind-the-scenes steps make a real difference. She also credits her team, saying the clinic simply wouldn’t be the same without the people she works alongside every day.

For Brittany, the holiday season is all about family. She loves how the holidays slow life down and create space to reconnect with traditions. Some of her favorite family moments include Christmas games like the ornament exchange and cozy nights watching A Christmas Story. She’s proudly on Team Decorate Right After Halloween, is a months-ahead gift planner (already done!), and will choose baking cookies over wrapping presents every time — she’s a baker at heart. And if you see Brittany walking her cat on a leash and harness… yes, that’s her fun fact!

We’re continuing our Holiday Heroes series by celebrating the incredible team members who bring heart, compassion, and community spirit to our organization. Today, we’re proud to highlight Shelby Melton, CMA, and Clinical Lead at Rutherford Surgical Associates.

Shelby plays a vital role in keeping the practice running smoothly, from answering calls and rooming patients to gathering histories, assisting with surgical procedures, wound care, and keeping supplies organized. She started her career in Family Medicine in 2018 and transitioned to General Surgery in 2020, where she quickly became an essential part of the team. Shelby says her favorite part of working in health care is helping patients feel reassured, heard, and cared for, and she loves knowing she’s making a positive impact in her community. She describes her coworkers as her family — and they feel the same about her.

When it comes to the holidays, Shelby is all-in. She’s proudly on Team Decorate the Day After Halloween, and her favorite part of the season is spending time with family and enjoying all the sweets and good food — especially red velvet cake. She’s a joyful gift-giver who finds so much happiness in surprising the people she loves. Her family tradition of Christmas Eve bingo (with gifts as prizes) is a highlight each year, and her most cherished holiday memory is when her husband proposed under the Christmas lights in downtown Forest City. Shelby always plans to shop early, but usually finds herself finishing last-minute — and while she loves baking cookies, she avoids wrapping presents by stocking up on gift bags.

We’re grateful for the warmth, dedication, and joy Shelby brings to her patients, coworkers, and community.
