What is a Trigger Point and how do they develop?

🟢A Trigger Point (TrP) is a tender spot or ‘knot’ in a tight band of the muscle or fascia. Direct compression or muscle contraction of the tender spot or ‘knot’ can cause referred pain. Referred pain is often felt or perceived distant from the spot of pain itself.

🟢Trigger points develop as a result of poor posture and muscular injuries. When muscle or fascia become overstretched, or inflamed, tiny tears in the those soft tissues can occur. These knotted fibers restrict blood needed by the muscle cells and therefore create trigger points.

🔺Poor mechanics of an athletes foot and ankle are typically the culprit in developing many of the bodies compensatory trigger points.

🟢What to look for:
🔹Pronation of the rear-foot or (flat feet)
🔹Muscular Insufficiency of Tibialis
Posterior
🔹Limited internal rotation of the hip
🔹Muscular Insufficiency of Glute Medius/
Minimus
🔹Decreased eccentric control of psoas
🔹tighntess of quadratus lumborum

The treatment of the gluteus minimus trigger point will only be as good as your assessment!
Treatments would include but not be limited to:
🙌 Manual Therapy or Manual Medicine to address the kinetic chain of trigger points.
🧘retraining respiration to relieve tension on the diaphragm which is a core muscle
📍pin-point motor control exercises to re-educate traumatized tissue

On Wednesday of each week, we will discuss a new ‘trigger point’ and effective ways to treat it successfully!

How do we treat and manage these trigger points?

At SCORE, our team of physical therapists and manual medicine practitioners assess movement patterns of the body as a whole, paying close attention to posture, coordination, muscular imbalances and quality of movement. This functional evaluation plays a key role in determining your treatment plan. By integrating various approaches, we are able to identify the source of the dysfunction or pain and implement the best interventions to meet your needs.

On Wednesday of each week, we will discuss a new ‘trigger point’ and effective ways to treat it successfully!

Neck Pain? We’re here to help!

Let’s face it. We’ve all been stuck at home and many of us have been putting a lot of hours in at the laptop trying to work from home. On top of that, we have less opportunity to move with gyms being closed.

While there is no such thing as perfect posture, being in one position for a long time will eventually cause pain.

With the ⬆️ in working from home, many will be setting themselves up with workspaces that aren’t doing your neck any favors!

Picture 1 ❌: Not a great position for the head and neck. His head is far out in front of his shoulders, he is looking down towards his computer screen, and his legs are not planted on the floor. In this position, the muscles in the back of his neck are working hard to hold his head up. With his feet being off of the floor, he does not have a strong base of support. If he stays in this position(which most people do) for a long time, he will most likely develop a feeling of stiffness and pain in his neck.

Picture 2 ✅: This is a much better position for his neck. The desk has been rearranged so that the computer screen is higher. This lets him get his work done, while keeping his neck and shoulders in more of a straight line, reducing the tension on the muscles in the back of his neck. Add to this that he has placed his feet on the floor, which creates a much more stable base. This position will allow him to work for longer without neck pain and stiffness.

⚠️Pay attention to your work station set up and move often throughout your day to ward off neck pain!⚠️

As always, we are here to help with any questions you have about neck pain, workstation set up, or finding some fun ways to get moving while you’re stuck at home!
