GILA RIVER INDIAN COMMUNITY, Ariz. โ A historic moment for youth athletics and Indigenous representation will unfold as the Gila River Indian Community prepares to host the first all Indigenous NFL FLAG football tournament. The landmark event will kick off on January 31 at 10:00 a.m., made possible through a collaborative partnership between the Gila River Indian Community Tribal Recreation and Wellness Program and Arizona Cardinals Youth Football Development.
This inaugural tournament will feature all Indigenous athletes from across the Community, competing in a highenergy, 3 game pool play, single elimination bracket until one champion remains. Divisions include 6U, 8U, 10U, 12U, 15U, and High School All Girls, with players ranging from ages 3 to 15.
More than a sporting event, the tournament represents a powerful celebration of culture, youth empowerment, and community pride. By bringing NFL FLAG football to local Indigenous athletes, the program aims not only to promote physical activity and teamwork but also to strengthen cultural identity and inspire the next generation of leaders.
โThis tournament is more than just a gameโitโs an opportunity for our youth to see themselves represented, supported, and celebrated,โ organizers said. โWeโre proud to help create a space where athletes can compete, grow, and connect through sport.โ
The Gila River Indian Community and Arizona Cardinals Youth Football program continue to work together to expand access to highquality youth sports programs, ensuring Indigenous youth have meaningful opportunities to learn, compete, and thrive.
