By Erin Emmanuel Being Reminded I did not anticipate that becoming a first-time parent would acutely challenge my sense of self and cause me to re-examine traumatic childhood experiences I thought I had laid to rest. And yet, as I rocked my little girl through the long and harrowing nights of her in...

In this week’s parent-baby class we talked about supporting our immune system with herbalist, Jen Bredesen who teaches at the CA school of herbal studies. She offered simple practices for making herbal teas, creating an herbal steam and infusing your bathtub with specific plants and flowers.

This was all valuable but what felt most valuable was our conversation around rest and how our toxic culture of productivity de-values rest and recovery, even when we are sick.

There are so many industries that manufacture products and ideals to make physical and emotional symptoms invisible so we can get on with our work. We have been taught to ignore and/or suppress all of the messages that our body gives us to slow down and rest.

Nothing is wrong with a tired body or mind.

What is wrong is the lack of healthy human centered policies in the workplace, at school and even at home. Support systems and other necessary resources to rest and recover are not accessible to most of us, not to mention overcoming the toxic mindset that our value is based on our productivity.

Parents have been responding to unrealistic expectations around our health and well-being.

When parents receive physiologic cues (I feel crummy), name them (my throat is raw and scratchy) and take action (and REST is an action), we are re-defining a narrative that our body’s health is not valuable.

Let’s reclaim our time and devote it to our family’s health and well-being when we are sick or exhausted.

This is culture-making. (h/t )

I’m Kerry Ingram, I teach folks how to create and sustain local parent-baby groups so conversations like this can be part of the postpartum year and our family culture-making.

I’m offering a free mini-course on October 5th to share some bite-size pieces what makes a Community Supported Postpartum group perfect for building community with culture-making baked in each week.

Our full 9-day facilitator training is on October 23rd and enrollment is now open. Links in Bio.

I have been an ob/gyn for almost 17 years. And I would like to invite you to come into my exam room just for a moment, to listen to the stories I have heard from women. Listen carefully to what is said to me behind closed doors. And then get the f**k out, you and your decisions about her life don’t belong there.... I can’t afford to feed my children I have now. I fear for my life. I went into heart failure with my last pregnancy. My tubes were tied, I never intended to have more kids. I’m starting grad school in a week. I had an affair and made a mistake and I don’t want to break up my family. I am alone. I had a one night stand and don’t know who the father is. I was r***d. I am 13 years old. I’m 48 years old. I have breast cancer and am getting chemotherapy. My uterus ruptured during my last pregnancy. My diabetes is completely uncontrolled. This pregnancy put me in kidney failure. I have malignant melanoma. My baby has multiple anomalies. I’m worried I will kill myself if I keep this pregnancy. I don’t want a baby right now. I don’t want to be pregnant.

Here’s the thing. Even with all those statements, the truth is, it should not matter. You don’t need a reason other than, this is your choice.

My body. My choice.

And if I get sent to prison for 99 years for taking care of my patient during such a personal and difficult decision, we have gone too far!
