Pause for a moment, and think about the things the people we love the most say to us, and what we say to them. “Why are you leaving already” might actually mean, “I miss you, and want to spend more time with you.” Or, “Are you really going to eat that” might better be said as “I love you and am worried about your health.”

This difficulty with translation – both our feelings into words that express how we actually feel, and hearing the sentiment under what other people actually mean – is a huge source of conflict for almost all of us.

Solitude can feel like relief, not because people are absent, but because demand is suspended. The nervous system is no longer required to track, respond, anticipate, or adjust to others. In that suspension, there is often a sense of ease - not because being alone is inherently better, but because obligation has been lifted.

That raises a more precise question: when solitude feels good, what is it actually relieving us from?

When we think about habits, we usually think about things like exercise, diet, or when we wake up in the morning. We do not often think about character-focused behaviors, or relationship behaviors, as habits. Yet habits in these domains are probably more important for both our health and our happiness than how often we exercise, because these habits of character are foundation to most other habits, such as or what time we wake up in the morning.

Honesty, in particular, is a foundational habit - both the honesty with which we relate to others, particularly the honesty with which we relate to ourselves. We usually think about honesty in a moral sense, but it may be more useful to think about it in a behavioral sense, like a habit similar to brushing our teeth or flossing.

Radical acceptance does not make us passive; it loosens the grip of the self that is constantly bracing against what it does not like. When we stop insisting that reality match our preferences, we stop feeding the tension created by craving and aversion.

Treating ourselves kindly is a skill like any other – fixing a car, riding a bike, throwing a ball. We tend not to do it not because we are somehow inherently bad, but instead because we have never learned the skill. Fortunately, that also offers a way forward. Like any skill, being kind to ourselves is something we can practice, improve on, and get better at. Like any skill, it might feel awkward or strange at first.

And like any skill, the more we practice it, the better we get at it.

I’ve written before how the way we define the opposite of something defines the thing itself. When we hear that we need to be more accepting of people, or things, there’s a lot that this can mean. If the opposite of acceptance is denial, then accepting something means facing the truth, embracing reality as it actually is. If we define the opposite of acceptance as resistance, then acceptance means something much closer to surrender, or acquiescence. If we define the opposite of acceptance as rejection, then acceptance means something much closer to love.

I was recently talking to a patient who had picked up smoking again after successfully quitting. He was off ci******es for a while, and then picked them up again during a period of high stress. He was so angry with himself. “Why the $% # would I do this to myself?” he asked me. “I know better, I hate these things, and here I am addicted again.”

His reaction is understandable. We all do things that are not in our best interest, and end up in a place where we are frustrated and disappointed in ourselves. As a result, we often become harsh with ourselves, berating ourselves for being stupid, weak, idiotic, or some combination of those. We curse ourselves, scold ourselves, and demand that we do better.

This approach rarely works, almost never makes us feel better, and is generally not a helpful strategy for changing behavior.

Think about the last time someone started a sentence to you (or you started by telling someone else), “I have to be honest with you…” Following that beginning, when has there ever been something said that made you feel good– or was anything other than a criticism? When we preface what we say with, “I need to be honest,” that’s basically code for this is going to suck or you are not going to want to hear this.

It is a funny observation that honesty has such a painful connotation, if not one that is outright negative. Why should telling the truth be painful?

When we talk about distilling something down, we’re talking about reducing it to its essence. We take something made up of many constituent parts and work to extract what matters most. The aim is not to capture everything, but to remove what is extraneous or confounding so that what remains is useful and clarifying.
