November Image of the Month: Atrophic Holes, provided by Nick Hundley, Colorado Retina Associates.

While these numerous holes appear like they portend certain doom, looks can be deceiving! Lattice with atrophic holes is a common reason patients are referred to a retina specialist for a careful scleral depressed exam. The vast majority of time, the holes are asymptomatic and will never cause the patient any harm by causing a retinal detachment. In this case, there appears to be small amounts of subretinal fluid around a few of the holes. Depending on the clinical context, the specialist may either observe these holes or apply laser retinopexy to prevent spread of the fluid.
